Regrets after Gastric Sleeve Surgery, is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I am only 1 day post op and things went pretty well, I am home and experiencing nausea and some discomfort. I feel overwhelmed with the life changes that are in front of me and feel sad--Has anyone experienced this and if so does it pass? I also am worried that I won't get 60 oz of liquid in daily , which I was told is essential to prevent dehydration.

The whole thing feels surreal right now, I appreciate any thoughts you might have.I did not jump into this, I gave it a great deal of time, exploration and thought before committing to this surgery.

Thanks

Your feelings are normal and something many of us wrestle with. I am 3 days post op and despite how much research I did before the surgery I still have the same feelings that you are now going through. You are not alone. Please know that your feelings are normal and they will pass. The recovery period is probably one of the toughest challenges we will have.

Completely normal!!! I was about a week post ok and I kept thinking what have I done!!! Had my 1st emotional break down at 2 weeks post op. I think it was just lack of carbs ;) I am now 3 weeks post op and feeling 100x better. Once you heal and u find a normalcy in your routine and diet it makes it much easier. My scales have slowed down this week (dreaded 3 week stall) but our finally moving again. It's definitely life changing. Keep your head up! It will get better :)

I am 10 days out. It took me eight months and many doctors appts. before I had the surgery, so I definitely didn't take it lightly. I can honestly say I felt the same way the first 4-5 days I was seriously regretted my decision. The first 2 days after the surgery were horrible. I think I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia or the meds. I've only been able to get alittle over 30 grams of Protein in so far. About 4 days ago, I was able to take all my Vitamins without feeling sick. I'm happy to tell you that I am feeling very lucky and grateful that I had the surgery. I know it will change my life for the better. I'm feeling better and stronger each day that goes by. Hang in there, try to keep yourself busy so the days will go faster.

My doctor prescribed me a nausea med which was very helpful:-)

Your feeling are definitely normal! I am 3 1/2 months post op and I feel great! The first 5-6 days I questioned it. I asked myself why, but when I went in for my first post op appt and saw the weight loss I knew I was going to be ok. I knew I had made the right decision. Today I am down 83lbs and have gone from a size 24W pant to a size 14 misses. You can do it! Push any negative thoughts or feelings away. Stay positive and stay focused! You are doing great!

It is soooooo normal! I had a couple of melt downs. Depressed. Hurting. Couldn't take my pain meds. Not everyone has a rosy recovery. I was tired and irritable. Ummmmm lets see what else. I worried about Protein and fluids and I thought oh crap now what am I going to do? Well eventually you will find your groove and what works for you. Some people lose faster than others which to me was depressing. But slow but sure it starts coming off and you will start looking and feeling good and what you are going through will all be a distant memory. Good luck on your journey and it is just that YOUR journey. And you can do it!

@@Wmc1231 I think what your feeling is pretty normal for some people. I would just like to say if you get 60oz of Water down this early you are my hero! I'm 11 days out and have 0 issues, I sip water almost all day almost full-ish drinks really and there is no way I could ever get 60oz in at this point. I can do about 40oz Max! So please don't get discouraged if you can't do that. I don't know anyone who could that early

I'm with Elode ... I have yet to get 60oz and I am 15 days out. I average around 40oz too. Even when I sat down and sipped 1 oz every 15 minutes ... I couldn't get 60oz. My nut told me to get 75 Protein but I have yet to get more than 65 .... usually it's between 50 and 60. I was very good about walking the first week and half and have now fallen off.

All thst is to say I feel the same frustration. .. did I fo the right thing. But as I sit here I just finished 1/4 cup of cottage cheese and realize that it has taken all day for me to eat it. I'm not hungry and that is so unusual. I'm not going through my cabinets looking for something quick and unhealthy to eat. This can only be a good thing.

I didn't know it was normal until today. I guess it is normal, it doesn't feel like it is while you are going through it. I'm still going through it a little bit, but I can say it is getting better. Your body has to adjust to the changes, it's hard but it does happen!

Stay strong! You can do it!! :) This is only Phase 1, it will pass.

Yup. You're normal.

And you'll figure it all out. Really. I promise.

It's just a bit overwhelming the day after surgery. Tonight, just sip your Water (as much as you can) and try to get some rest.

You've weeks and months to get your new life all the way to "normal."

I'm nearly 3 months out, and at this point I feel VERY comfortable navigating this new way of life.

But one of the things about "this new way of life" is that it's full of phases. You keep learning new things at each phase.

Everyone will tell you ... "It gets better."

And it does. Just repeat that to yourself: "It gets better."

A LOT better. :)

I'm so glad all of you posted replies to her post. I'm 4 days post op and have been feeling the same way. I must admit though it does get a little bit better everyday. I'm also glad to know that I'm not alone with the Water issues. :)

Gets better everyday and a lot better after the first week. I also am glad to hear about everyone's liquid intake as I am 10 days out too and can only get about 40 oz and have been worried about it.

I did get all my Water and Protein early on and it was very hard to do. I was told to drink an ounce every 5 minutes, which seems to be different from what others were told to do. I was a slave to the clock and my trusty kitchen timer. Every time the kitchen timer rang, I would drink my ounce and set it for five minutes again. I did this the first week and it worked to get 64 ounces water and 100 grams of protein in everyday. After the first week, I wanted to be more active and didn't have my eye on the clock or use the timer all day. I would measure out the liquids I needed to drink to meet my goal in the morning, and that seemed to help me make sure I consumed enough everyday after the first week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
