Almost a week post op

Hey all, I just discovered this forum and I'm having a field day reading everything. My story is below!

I had the sleeve done last Thursday, the 6th. My first 24 hours, when I was hooked up to the pain pump, I was fine. I got up and walked with no issue. I was very groggy. However, the second day things started going downhill. I had a severe Migraine (not uncommon for me) and the surgeon told me I could take my imitrex as long as I crushed it. WORST IDEA EVER. Shortly after I took it they had to take out my IV because it was leaking into my hand and my hand was huge. They decided to just leave it out since it was discharge day. I proceeded to get deathly ill, laying in the fetal position on the bed with extreme pain and nausea. The nurse said since my IV had been removed there was nothing they could do. I finally just begged to get home and was that sick for the next 24 hours. I was dry heaving every few minutes the whole night (nothing in my stomach to throw up) and horrible cramping in my chest. I told my husband several times that i wanted to die (a bit dramatic, huh??) I should mention that in my surgery I also had a hiatal hernia repair, so maybe that made things worse for me?? Anyway, things finally started looking up on the 3rd day and I've been gradually improving. I actually returned to work today (day 7) and did pretty well. I'm sticking to the liquid diet and have lost 15 pounds so far. Overall, of course I am glad I had the surgery and the few hours of misery were totally worth it. :)

I'm reading that a lot of people did liquids pre-op. Oddly, I had no special diet pre-op except that I was supposed to "eat light" the day before surgery. I wonder what difference the pre-op liquid diet makes?

Welcome to the forums! So glad you have turned a corner and are doing better. Most doctors that require the pre-op diet do it to shrink the liver so that it is less in the way during surgery. I start mine on the 19th and it is liquids, plain yogurt and 1/2 cup cottage cheese a day....good thing I like both yogurt and cottage cheese huh? lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
