How long were you in the hospital ?

Recommended Posts

I think it depends on the way the surgery is done. I would have been okay going home after one day. I was bored and spent half the 2nd day playing candy crush on my iPad.

I do think it has a lot to do with surgical technique and perioperative pain management. I would have been super bored staying more than a night. instead of laying around in a hospital bed, I was able to walk to Walmart, GNC, and Starbucks twice, lounge by the pool, and rent a movie in my hotel room within the first 24 hours after surgery. And went shopping and sightseeing within 48 hours. So did the other 5 people sleeved the same day as me.

I had surgery on Friday at 1:00pm and was discharged around 10:00am on Sunday. My original plan was to only stay 1 night, but I also had hiatal hernia repair and I guess it turned out to be larger than they anticipated. They ended up putting a couple stitches in my diaphragm to keep everything in place. Because of this I was in a lot of pain. Dr said if it's just the sleeve there's not usually a lot of pain, but with the hernia and the diaphragm, that's what caused my pain. There was NO WAY I was ready to go home the next day. BUT, by the morning of the 2nd day I felt better and was discharged. Make sure if you have pain to let them know!

I had surgery on a Monday at one and was discharged on Thursday at one. I stayed an extra day because of vomiting. I couldn't imagine same day surgery for this, or even leaving the following day. I spent the day following surgery miserable and throwing up.

Surgery was at the butt crack of dawn on May 5th. Went home on May 7th. No other organs were removed or repaired at that time. My program keeps everyone in the hospital for a minimum of 2 days.

Seriously, kudos to you. I didn't really even feel human until today. Pre-op I was really hoping to get out after one night, but now I'm glad I was in for two nights.

Surgery late Monday afternoon but didn't leave hospital until Thursday. I became dehydrated due to extreme nausea...

I had surgery on November 12th in the morning and was released the 13th around 7pm. My doctor had certain criteria that had to be met before I could be released and I met them with flying colors so I was able to leave. Another girl that had surgery the same day wasnt able to be released that night because she had some complications with the anethesia.

Thanks, but it's the doc who deserves the kudos. :) My husband and I both had the same surgery that morning and both went home that evening. I think our surgeon must have an especially gentle touch because we had no complications, and almost no pain. I couldn't even begin to tell you which of the incisions was where the stomach came out because none of them hurt. I've had multiple laparoscopic surgeries in the past and none of them went as smoothly as this one.

@imsoglad56. - I think it's always part doctor skill & part patient that makes these surgeries go well.

2 days and I was only a sleeve. I had a choice to go home after one day but decided to stay the 2nd day just to be safe. I live over 3 hours from my surgeon and did not want to risk having to come back because I wanted to be at home. Honestly, the 2nd night made a world of difference and the extra Fluid was welcome too.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
