Vitamins and other meds

Recommended Posts

I absolutely hate chewable vitamins. I have tried a lot of different ones and just can't find one I like. I am tolerating them because I know that I have to. My question is this...can you crush up a regular Calcium or Multivitamin and take it that way? I have been doing that with some of my other medications (putting it in yogurt), and was just wondering if this was an acceptable way to take supplements.< /p>

I also am currently taking an antibiotic. It is in a capsule form, so I have to break it open and pour the powder on some yogurt. It is a pretty small capsule, so is it necessary to open it up? Do our sleeves not break down the capsule?

Curious...thanks~

Have you tried the Celebrate brand chewables? Those are the only ones I like.

Yes you can. I couldn't find the centrium chewables and I needed a Vitamin without dyes or food coloring in them. I bought Vitamins from Whole Foods and crushed them with a mortar & pestle. I then mixed it in a tiny bit of almond butter which almost disguised the taste and took them that way.

My nutritionist told me I can take regular Vitamins. You may want to ask if you have to use chewables. I couldn't stand the taste of them.

I am taking regular Vitamins. My doctor tends to be more on the conservative side. He was concerned that a new sleeve might not be able to absorb all the nutrients a whole Vitamin. For the first 30 days I simply crushed them. It was less work for my body to break down. Since they were all natural, the taste wasn't that great, but once mixed with almond butter I could barely taste them.

I have been having a hard time with my Multivitamins. The Center I go to sells the Bariatric Advantage. While it's no doubt a great Vitamin, I have a hard time with the taste (it makes me want to gag). I struggle every day to get them down. Not that it causes nausea, I just have a hard time getting past the taste that is gagging me. I've tried putting it in yogurt, and it turns the yogurt a reddish color, applesauce, and even tried a Protein shake smoothie. Tried the chewables (BA kind--fruit flavored too) and it just tastes terrible.

How long until sleevers can swallow the capsules whole (without breaking them open)? Can I use other Multivitamin chewables (i.e., the Gummy multivitamins) until I can swallow the Bariatric Advantage (gel capsules)? I am 10 days Post-OP.

Other than the Vitamins, I am doing great.

My nut told me I can swallow them whole at 2 months out.

gummy vitamins are out because they are not complete. You can try other chewables, but basically you need to hang in there until you are 2 months out.

I had my two week post op follow up with my doc yesterday, three days past my two weeks. I bought the Bariatric Advantage Vitamins and have to take them twice a day. They never said I couldn't swallow them whole and that is what I am doing.

Now even before surgery I was a very bad pill taker no matter what the size. I have to place the pill way back of my throat and swallow. Most times I gag myself but I cannot stand the pills in my mouth at all and cannot get them down any other way. The Bariatric Advantage is on the bigger size but not huge. I have had no problem the three times I have taken them. Whew!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
