Sugar addiction

Recommended Posts

I feel so frustrated with myself, and disappointed. I have let sugar creep back into my life and it feels worse than ever. If it's not chocolate I crave its mints or any other sweets. It is jeopardising my success and my weight has slowly crept up over the past few months. It started when I became very stressed and just couldn't eat, the only thing I enjoyed was chocolate and sucking sweets. It's been the slippery slope! I think I will need to cut them out of my life. Anyone else experienced this ? I feel I need support ????

Me too! It sounds so easy - stop eating it - but I just can't. I'm gaining weight back and it scares the Heck out of me. It seems like the bad stuff is so much easier to eat. I never throw up the bad stuff. HELP!

My dad used to say, "There is no such thing as 'I can't' for adults. There is only 'I won't' or 'I don't know how.'"

So maybe it's a little of both. Sugar IS addictive. When you get into a habit of feeding it to your body then your body wants it. Could you try replacing it with sugar free candies for a while to wean yourself off the real thing, then maybe wean yourself off those? Otherwise, it's probably like smoking. You just quit. It will probably be discomforting for a week, but it should get better. Don't let this hold you back from your goal. When I was trying to quit smoking, I used to say to myself, "You are a human being. The most intelligent creature on earth. How are you letting your life be ruled by a piece of paper wrapped around some leaves?" Likewise, for you, it's just a food. But it gives some sort of reward. It's hard, but you really can do it!

I caved into the sugar craving during Halloween.

Still battling it. Not really winning.

Trying to choose chocolatey Protein bars but occasional chocolate pudding and dark choc candy bars slip in.

Thinking about getting over to the Vitamin store for a body cleanse regimen to detox it (and the sugar cravings) out of me.

Puppy-

Yes! I've found a good body cleanse/detox once or twice a yr is a good thing. makes me feel lighter, more energetic, better skin, no sugar/fat / junk food cravings.

The Vitamin stores have them. Basically, it's a box with a few pill bottles in it and some instructions. Some come with a disc. I get the regimen that detoxes heavy metals (aluminum, mercury) out as well as a general body-cleaning of chemical micro-junk we eat like pesticides on foods. Besically- cleaning out all those environmental and food toxins we breathe or ingest.

You can't drink coffee or alcohol during the course (takes about 2wks) and you have to really follow the eating/drinking program and take all the pills on a schedule.

The metal detox also detoxes Iron, copper, zinc, selenium- so you have to re-introduce them with a good quality Multi-Vitamin

Afterwards, you have to get GOOD bacteria back into your gut- Probiotics. I get Acidopholous (sp?) and yogurt with LIVE cultures. It's a good idea to get these in regularly anyway, but the detox kills all the bacteria in your gut so you have to be extra diligent about replacing the probiotic bacteria.

For the 1st week or so, you'll feel like absolute dog-doo doo! Really Tired, aches and pains, head fog, headaches. Just overall, lousy feeling. This is basically sugar/ caffein/ etc. withdrawals combined with lifting those toxins up out of your systems & organs: blood, renal, brain, liver, kidneys, glands, etc, and eliminating them through your urine and excrement. You'll pee & poop like a champ! lol

After that, your energy comes back the aches and pains go away, no more headaches, you'll feel mentally sharp and eliminate regularly. No cravings either.

The return to natural, (non-caffeinated) metabolic energy and overall feeling great is amazing.

I tried a mini bite size snickers on Halloween and it just wasn't satisfying anymore.

I would rather have fruits and veggies over candy.

I have had a bite of licorice and it was too sweet too! My sweet tooth seems to have disappeared with the stomach they cut out. Oh well lol

So weird to think how much sugar I used to eat. Now the most I get is from fruit or juice.

Halloween and all the sugar that came with it has been VERY bad for my diet. chocolate is my weakness. I crave it like nothing else. I've tried taming that craving with chocolate Protein shakes and chocolate Protein Bars, but it's a slippery slope.

I'm glad that I'm not alone in this. Also ... I think that I need to just ... toss the candy in the garbage. It's not like my son really needs the candy either.

Im having the same problem with sweets, especially chocolate ! Its my kryptonite !! Ive gained back 5 lbs in the last few months, partly from sweets, partly from less exercise. (Heel injury in June ( plantar facitis ), Dr.

says no walking, running , or anything that puts pressure on the heel until Janurary ! I miss running horribly !) I would be very careful with sugarfree chocolate or candy, they work very quickly like a laxative. Im not interested in the cleanse thing, but if you have any other advice Im all ears !!

Important note Re: the cleanse thing-

if you're on RX meds, def. consult your doc first.

The cleanse will detox the meds out of your system too.

yep I know what you mean, I have been looking around the internet to find something to help change my mind set because I know this what I need to work on. The way we think is the way we act and visa versa.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
