Post-Op Frustration. HELP!

Recommended Posts

I had sleeve surgery 5 weeks ago. I've only lost 21 lbs. Is that normal? I feel like I am not losing any weight at all and all of this was for nothing. I suffer for nothing. That's really how I feel. Please help!

Umm... Have you ever lost 21 pounds in one month? That is actually quite a bit of weight. Actually better than normal. Keep doing what you are doing and the weight will come off. Stalls will happen, and quite regularly. Good luck.

That sounds pretty good to me. To lose 21lbs in 5 weeks is an accomplishment. Keep it up do not give up.

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. In fact you may be getting near the end of it. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

I don't drive so I walk everywhere. Here's something to help you put 21 lbs lost into perspective. Go to the grocery store and buy 2 10 lb sacks of potatoes. Then walk with them for a mile. Get back to me on how that feels! It feels horrible!!! You're doing just great!

Thank you everyone. It's all so new to me. I read the article that was posted and I think I understand more now. It does seem like a lot to lose 21 lbs in a month or so. But when it just stops I assume I had done nothing wrong and just failed. It's crazy but I think this whole process is 90% mental. Which I didn't expect going into it. =) I appreciate all of you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
