What is the normal time of recovery for the sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I am hoping to have surgery in late November or early December, I am a grandma to 8 young grand kids and don't wish to feel miserable during the holidays. Doing without food or on preop liquid diet of no concern to me. However wanting to know if it would be better to wait till after the holidays or about how long after surgery until you feel good enough to be up and about. I am 55 this month and am very eager to move forward to my surgery but not ruin holidays for my grand babies. I am through all things required for insurance approval and have my appointment on November 19th when I know dates will be offered. Please any and all advice welcome and appreciated! :)

@@Grandma2tweeties of course I have to start by saying that everyone is different and recovers at their own pace. With that said - I was 50% at one week and 100% at about 15 days post op. Also keep in mind your meal plan phases which may look something like: Clear liquids for a couple of days, full liquids for 2wks and soft foods for 4-6wks.

Best Wishes and keep us posted so we can cheer you on and answer any questions you may have during the holidays.

Everyone's experience is different. My surgeon recommends that all patients plan on being 'out of commission' for three weeks. Other people will try to tell you a week is all you need, or perhaps two. This could be true for you, but so could the opposite. I am 31 and of good overall health status, but it did indeed take me about three weeks to function at low normal again (as in, 50% energy with very little pain). Stamina quickly returned after that, though. Half the battle following surgery is taking your meals/fluids/vitamins/medications, caring for wounds, walking regularly, managing anxiety (is XYZ normal or a sign of a major complication?), and remembering not to lift heavy things (like babies and grocery bags).

I was feeling pretty much back to normal and bored by 1½. When I had my 2 week f/u my doctor released me to drive and resume normal activities. The only thing I had to hold off on was swimming because my last incision hadn't completely scabbed over yet.

I am 62 and had my surgery on December 23, 2013. I came home on Christmas Day. What happened was......my daughters had Christmas with others in their homes. They took care of their own cooking and cleanup. My girls and grandkids came over here on New Years Day, just long enough for the gift exchange.

That was fine with me, and we will be back to normal this Christmas. Just let someone take care of the Christmas details, and you get some rest.

@@Grandma2tweeties, I went back to work after 2 weeks but felt dizzy throughout the two weeks. At my 2 weeks post op, the doctor said I was taking in too little calories hence the dizziness. I got better when I increased my intake. A co-worker was out for a month. Good luck with everything! By the way, you did not say if you are doing laparoscopic or open surgery. Laparoscopic surgeries heal faster than open surgeries.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
