A Week Out and Terrible Heartburn - HELP!

Recommended Posts

I got sleeved on Halloween, and over the past few days I've been having terrible heartburn.

Mio seems to exacerbate the problem, but I can't drink plain Water without feeling sick. This is causing me problems in getting in all my water every day.

Did anyone else have post-op heartburn? It's keeping me up at night and is just plain annoying. Is there anything I can do short of going on some kind of prescription? I'm using Tums now but they're not super helpful.

Thanks in advance!

this is very common...could be you are eating too fast or what you are drinking has caffeine...etc etc etc...

Since you are not saying it's gas, walking won't help...

Call your doctor, tums alone may not do it at this stage, you may need prilosec or something... call him and get some help...this will pass ;)

Call your surgeon. I suffered for 2 weeks before I called mine. He told me there was too much acid and wrote a prescription for Protonix. After a week it did the trick.

I was discharged on generic Prilosec. My doctor recommends talking it for at least 60 days post op.

Yup, Protonix (Pantoprazole) did, and still does, the trick for me.

My doctor prescribed me Carafate. He said it "coats" the stomach and I may need to be on it for the rest of my life. I take it twice a day in addition to Omeprazol once a day. If I forget, my stomach reminds me - it's like I'm a fire-breathing dragon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
