Hello. I am the first of two new lapband receipients here in PA 4/24/07. My surgeon was recertified during our procedure, so he is primarily a gastric bypass guy. A lot of the information/education I am receiving seems to be bypassed based. With that being said, I am prescribed actigall BID to help prevent gall stone development during rapid weight loss. My surgeon said that I will likely only lose 20% of my excess body weight this year and the next 2 consecutive years. I don't consider that to be a rapid loss or at least one that would put me at high risk. Any one else rx this medication? Any ideas of how to get more lap band specific education for myself?

thanks in advance,

Kelly

Hmmmm.... 20 percent doesn't seem right. I was told that the average loss for LB patients, over 2 years' time, is 50 percent of your excess weight.

thanks. I am only 13 pounds away from my 20% loss and only 4 weeks into the year. :youcandothis: Are you taking actigall or have you had your gall bladder removed?

I've lost 70lbs in 5 months. I am having gallbladder problems. Had I taken Actigall I wouldn't likely have these problems.

Banded people typically lose weight slower than bypass patients. That does not mean you won't lose weight in a big hurry initially. Taking the drug is your choice. Just how motivated are you? Want to lose fast or slow? Only you can make this decision.

I would ask about actigall. I lost 25% of my excess body weight in the first month and that was enough to cause the gall bladder to need to come out. I was shocked because 1) I didn't think 30 pounds was enough to trigger that many stones so it didn't function like it should and 2) I've never been a fast loser. The most I had ever lost before was 30 pounds and that had taken me months of hard work. At two months I had lost 40% of my excess weight. I always imagined the weight would come off slow and steady, but a bunch came off at once. You never know.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
