Fear of eating

Recommended Posts

Has anyone become afraid to eat after surgery. I'm 6 weeks out and I actually get anxiety over food. I have been eating between 500-600 calories/day and I'm on vacation. I'm trying to adhere to eating properly and last night we ate out. I ordered well but then we brought a dessert home. I ate 1/4 of it and was freaking out because my total caloric intake for the day was around 850 with the dessert. I exercised yesterday but still I'm afraid of gaining weight. My husband was telling me to give myself a break. Has anyone felt this way?

That dessert probably helped you lose some weight. Look it is not the best choice, but you are going to stop losing if you don't up your calories. The body will protect itself and if you can... up those calories to 1000. Your body needs to eat and use calories to lose. I know it sounds strange but it is fact....

Don't be so hard on yourself. So you ate a little dessert. Don't do it a lot. Once in a while if you find you can handle it. If it becomes a problem and you crave it too much. Then you will have to find other complex carbohydrates to eat.

I did not eat for almost 6 months. I had to be taught again to eat. It was not fun...I had complications and so was on a drip. Be happy that you are able to eat. But try to keep the choices as healthy as you can...okay :)

Thanks! I'm not a huge dessert person so it's not a worry for me. But I'm more worried about the fear I'm experiencing. I'm afraid if I make one wrong move I'll gain everything back :(

I am totally freaked out by food now. If I eat one thing that is not Protein or frivolous I actually almost have a panic attract related to guilt. I still feel like this surgery hasn't and isn't going to work. I have been stalled since one week after surgery. I am at 3 weeks out now. So for two weeks I haven't lost a single pound. I'm afraid to even eat anything now in fear of gaining. I'm just wondering if I have done the right thing.

I know people stall at different points. I would talk to your NUT to see if you are eating within a good calorie range and drinking Water helps. I was in a five day stall, drank a lot more water, and the weight started dropping again. I hope that helps. I am totally with you about the freaking out over food though

I think it is too soon to give yourself a break, once you reach goal weight maybe but 6 weeks out I think it is dangerous. I too stay away from anything out of the plan. We do not apply moderation very well or we would not have needed surgery so abstinence is the best way to go for know.

We have to learn moderation and balance. That was the issue as to why we got as big as we did. It starts before surgery and will be a lesson to work on for the rest of our lives.

We will never be perfect and complete abstinence is a recipe for a big problem. We live in the real world and must learn to eat in one as well. There is no way that anyone can stay completely on track and expect not to fall. We all fall. We just don't fail. This is not a limited time offer. This is changing how you view food and correcting your relationship with food and learning how to nutritiously maintain our bodies.

Recognizing sliders and finding new and better ways to deal with them. It is all part of the new you that must come into play for you to be a successful weight loss patient who is happy and feeling well. :)

food was terrifying at first. Now at nine weeks out, things are iffy. Experimenting with what settles well. Most things don't but I know it will get better. Meanwhile, I am losing weight so no complaints!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
