Mood swings...It's like PMS all the time at 3 months out

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery in August and lately I feel like I'm PMSing all the time. I snap at the smallest things and just get angry really fast. I've begun yelling at my kids, which I never did before surgery. They don't deserve it. I've been with my husband for 10 years and he's always been one of those guys you have to remind 3 or 4 times to get him to do a chore. All of a sudden, I get really angry with him when I have to ask him to do something more than once. Like screaming at him and being just plain mean. I know it's not right but it's like I can't control it. I'm trying to just walk out of the room when I feel my anger starting so I don't say anything I would regret. I know it's hormonal, but can I do something about it? Is there a medication that could calm me? I take my Vitamins and get my Water and Protein. Just looking for advice.

You may want to consider therapy before you alienate your family.

I've had the exact opposite. I used to yell if I was awakened. Last night we got a phone call at 1 and my spouse thought I'd blow a lid... nope, I was content.

I've found that since my surgery I'm not angry all the time. I don't have my bi-polar mood swings. I'm more relaxed and things don't bother me as much.

We've been seeing a counselor and maybe that has helped.

Therapy is nothing to be ashamed of. Talk to someone and you'll be amazed at how much good it will do.

Also in regards to your question about medication, I'd ask your doctor about Xanax. Maybe 2 MG 3 x a day. it works quickly and will calm you down. I used to take this stuff religiously now I don't need it. Some doctors won't prescribe it, but it sounds like it would definitely help you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
