Getting banded on wednesday, pre-op nerves

Recommended Posts

Hello all!! I am being banded on Wednesday and I don't know what to feel. I've read so many negative things about the band and I'm feeling kind of pessimistic. I was told to stay off the Internet, but then I found this forum and it seemed pretty positive. Im getting pre-op nerves. What if I don't wake up? What if this surgery doesn't help me lose weight no matter how hard I try? I want to be excited, I really do, as this is something that I've wanted for a long time and it's finally coming true, but it just doesn't feel real to me. I should be excited about this new journey I am about to go on, but I'm not as excited as I thought I would be. Did anyone else feel like this??

Everyone I think goes through this thinking in the beginning right up until they even roll you into surgery , some have even thought about jumping off the gourney but , all of have read good & bad that makes us human but if you did your research on your surgeon & feel YOU can ask him/ her anything & feel comfortable with that Surgeon for your life in their hands ,you should be ok & if you have read stuff then you know to follow your Surgeon's instructions , so You can do what is best for YOU, good luck.

Thank you. I am very confident in my surgeon and his team. He banded both of my sisters and did the sleeve on my sister in law. I just couldn't help but let some of the negative talk get to me.

Good morning Sophie139,

First, BREATHE...I understand your nerves - I had them too!

I want to encourage you to go back an review your information on the lap band and the surgery - you may have read that everyone's experience, though similar, will be DIFFERENT. We are all different - anatomically, psychologically...no two band experiences will be the same.

I've been banded nearly 6 years - my bandiversary is in a couple of weeks - and I would DEFINITELY do it all again! I am in SO much better health now than I was 6 years ago. Is it an all hearts-and-flowers experience? No - and primarily because I haven't done everything I need to do. I am doing MUCH better now - because I've taken responsibility and made proactive steps to "tighten up" my HEAD GAME. My body is ready to do what it needs to do - with me sticking to my eating plan (not a DIET - hate that word now), incorporating exercise into my life on a regular basis (just coming off a foot injury that threw me for a loop), and working on improving / strengthening my self-esteem (a constant journey), I am doing MUCH better.

I've been as low at 180 lbs - pretty near my goal - and I'm headed back down there again. There will be ups and downs, there will be good days and bad days, but overall, it's the single BEST thing I've done for myself.

GO FOR IT! And get ready to Celebrate your new, healthier life and your fabulous, stronger and healthier body. I'm rooting for you! :-)

There will always be negative stuff , , for me I also used to look at the negative stuff , sometimes I still do but then I scroll right past it , I would rather stay positive & I like to give or get positive feedback I don't need negative stuff because I used to do negatively all by myself with food to make me feel better lol so keep positive thinking.

Thank you sooo much for your replies!!! I've read and re-read my options, and I feel confident that I'm going to be successful with the lapband! I stopped reading all of the negative stuff, and I'm just trying to focus on my journey, which im sure will be a roller coaster ride, while paying attention to the positivity around me. Hopefully a year from now I'll be a much healthier me! Thank you!!

Even with 40 lbs loss I still worry I won't complete my journey. It could be this worry that keeps me going even with other life stressing things that happen in everyone's life

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
