I asked the nutritionist yesterday if she knew my dr's position on the drain, and she looked shocked. Told me there should be no drain and to just listen to the nurses and move asap so they don't have to use cuffs or stockings

My surgeon told me my surgery was a boring easy peezy surgery. No drains. No hernia repairs. Shrunk liver. I did have to wear those blow up calf things while i was at the hospital. Im going to try to not take pain meds today. All i want to know is when the heartburn goes away. I finally drank a Protein Drink this mornin....it took me 2.5 hrs to drink it. :/

I see many people questioning the "drain" --I had my gastric sleeve surgery done in Minneapolis, MN in August, and did not have any type of drain. My entire experience has been amazing!! My Dr. did NOT require the pre-op fasting diet...all that was required was Clear Liquids 2 days before surgery. I was only in the hospital 1 night, they got me up walking the halls 6 hours after the surgery and then upon discharge the next day was put on FULL liquids. Since August 18, I have lost a total of 47 pounds, and feel fabulous. Don't be afraid to have this procedure done, it really is the perfect diet/health tool. Fortunately, I have not been ill at all, I am very careful to measure ALL my food and track everything I eat and drink. Again, to anyone looking to have this done ---go for it----it is one of the best gifts you can give yourself on your journey to get happy and healthy. Best of luck to everyone out there!

Yes they were. I took them off the next morning when the anesthesia had worn off enough!

Ok, ok.... drain removal? Drain coming out? Someone please explain - panicking over here with surgery in exactly a month LOL

I had.two drainage tubes,a Foley Cath. the hose sleeves, stayed.two weeks in the hospital but __I had two hernia repair I was really sick it has been seven months I have loss 105lbs so Don,t fear it is the best thing I have done I feel great except my aritithis__for the first time in four years I can go shopping and not get in a.wheelchair Don,t worry about the drain it does.not hurt best wishes December sleevers

Well... these are now questions for my final meet with him before the surgery..... I don't do the whole panty hose thing outside of surgery, let alone wanting to wear them right after lol @@pinkbunies

I'm nervous again.....I'm calling my surgeon at 9:00 central time to inquire about this drain thing. That picture scares me.

What does the drain coming out mean? I have read that term a few times.

The drain is a tube with a small bulb on the end that used to remove pus, blood or other fluids from a wound. They are commonly placed by surgeon or interventional radiologists. It's inserted once you are under so you don't feel it. it's not uncomfortable and it shouldn't hurt coming out. You just feel it running through your insides when they pull it out. While you are in the hospital the nurse will check and empty it several times a day. Not every doctor uses a drain and it doesn't hurt.

I had a drain because I had a previous history of developing a really large abscess after surgery I had 10 years ago. Other than that I had an incredibly easy surgery. I was up and walking in recovery. I woke up and had to pee. Like really, really bad. They asked if I wanted a bed pan or could I walk and I was already climbing off the bed. The wheeled me to the bathroom and I practically ran inside. Since I was up and moving I didn't have compression stockings or those leg wrap things. I had no pain at all. It was a little sore, but I didn't need any meds for it. My doctor puts all his patients on stool softners for 30 days post op and prilosec for 90 days post op so I haven't have any issues with Constipation or heart burn. I was in the hospital for 2 days, but honestly I was ready to go after 1. I only had to do clear liquids the day before surgery but was encouraged to reduce my calories and increase my Protein for the 2 weeks prior to surgery. In the hospital I was given liquid Protein, Jello ( which I don't eat & sent back) and tea. I was discharged on full liquids and put on soft foods after 2 weeks. At 6 weeks I was told I could eat whatever I can tolerate.

Don't panic, not everyone has pain. You've made the right decision.

My doc requires each of his patients to wear a drain for 10 days. He says it helps prevent infection and detect leaks. By day 3 I was ready to tear it out myself. It didn't hurt, but trying to conceal it and move around naturally with it in is difficult. I wore a lot of layers my first days back at work. He removed it in his office on my 10 day post op visit and as I watched him take it out I kept thinking it was like a clown pulling a long string of handkerchiefs from his sleeve. I started to giggle. It didn't hurt at all, just felt a bit odd. I was so relieved to have it out I didn't care. Now at 3 weeks post op it's a distant memory. :-)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
