Oh my!! That nurse has no right to "Judge"..its very unprofessional..if that was me I wouldve complained ...as you may of panicked ..not had the surgery and ate yourself silly..people do not realise how deep our issue go and our history is different from others. ...It couldve undone all that hard work you put into it...this nurse may say this all the time and no one saus a thing. It was the same with me but with the psychologist that kept holding me back..said she "understood" my pain as she sat back showing off her size 00 figure! I complained as these people play with our lives...i must say not all are like that..but this woman thought she had control..within 3 weeks if complaining i got my surgery date which is in 2 weeks!! Stay in control you have come such a long way! X

Thanks GingerDiane! You are so right, and I do think I'll complain. When I began considering VSG I started seeing a food therapist. The self examination of that process was what made me realize that I'm truly an addict. It was so hard for me to come to that realization. I felt like such a failure for not being able to control myself. One I moved past that point, I began to feel better because I finally began to understand that I needed to approach a solution as an addict, and also to realize that I'm not alone in my addiction. That nurse momentarily brought back my feelings of shame, and self punishment. It is a vulnerable time before surgery, and the nurses especially need to be supportive, and kind.

you are spot on!! Its like saying to an alcoholic or a gambler " oh you look a normal non addictive person..you dont look like an addict" those words could ease anyone to think " you know what shes right im ok.....lets go have a drink and have a gamble" just one word can make me go into flashbacks.

hi

Hi Sother,

Good luck next week, and feel free to message me if I can answer any questions for you. I had a rough morning today but am feeling fantastic this evening. I'm really looking forward to having a wider selection of foods tomorrow as my surgeon allows full liquids starting on day 3! I'm still sleeping a lot but I think that's good for the healing process.

Hello my January buddies. I pray that everyone is doing well and in good spirits. Okay, now to my experience with surgery.

As I stated before my arrival time was 530a on 1-13-15 and my surgery time was 730a. Well I get there, check in and get taken in back by the nurse. She checked my weight...12 lbs down thanks to pre-op diet. I get changed into my hospital attire and they get the IV going. All ready huh? Nope. They come in and tell me that I was my dr first case, but he had just been called into an emergency surgery and I'll be laying there waiting a couple extra hours. He came by and talked to me and told me it wouldn't be that long and to just relax. Cool

So about 930a things get to moving. Take me in , get me to sleep and next thing I remember I was in my room. I had no incision site pain...only gas, so I didn't have to use the pain pump they gave me. I did however have a lot of nausea and vomiting. It scared me at first because it was bloody (sorry), and it lasted the entire day. They took me to do the leak test and I thought they were going to cancel because I kept vomiting....funny thing though, I held that dye down so I could get through the test but as soon as I got back to my room it started again. I was given all kinds of nausea meds and patch behind the ear.

Well they got the nausea/vomiting controlled and started me on my liquids so I could come home on time and I did. :-) I'm still dealing with gas, but it's moving through me slowly. Still no pain though.

I had surgery yesterday and the trapped gas pains are awful. I didn't meet my Protein or Water goals for today. I felt too full.

I'm having gas issues too. So far I'm doing ok with the protein and water...I don't want to get dehydrated and end up back in the hospital. Try drinking some mylanta. That should help. I will get better, that's what I keep telling myself.

I had my surgery yesterday around 3. I was in preop an hour longer than anticipated. I had a bad moment when the nurse told me, "you don't look like you need gastric sleeve surgery." Her tone felt very condescending.

I had a brief but intense panic about whether or not I was doing the right thing. I got teary, thank God my hubby was there to make me feel better. I then got really angry, and felt it was so unprofessional of the nurse to say that to me. She has no idea what it's been like, gaining and loosing, having my hips and knees ache when I try an exercise, and all the other host of things that come with being obese. Thank goodness I haven't seen her again!

Once I was wheeled into the OR things moved very fast. I remember entering the OR. ! and then nothing until waking up in recovery. and was in my room following recovery by 6. I've been sleeping a ton. Little green pain med button has been my friend. I've been up to walk twice, had nausea and cramping, but all tolerable.

I thought I'd need entertainment in here but so far nod off every time I start something. Speaking of, I think I'll nap now. Best wishes to all about to join me on the other side of the table!

Glad to hear you are doing well. Some of these so called medical professionals are anything but professional. They don't know or understand your reasons for doing the surgery, and frankly it's none of their business.

Thanks Msnicnic! It feels good to have the support of those who do understand! I'm sorry to hear you had such a rough start after your surgery. Im not sure if you've tried gas-x thin strips, but I've found them soothing, especially the peppermint. Thanks also for sharing your experience. Nothing could have 100% prepared me for going into surgery but I feel like reading about others experiences helped to calm my nerves and feel well informed. It's still helping me to hear what others are experiencing.

I had surgery January 12th and doing pretty good. I kept getting naucious with the medicine so took some Children's Tylenol for a couple days. Still very sore on right side. I'm still on full liquids and doing good with getting it all in but I'm so hungry! Anybody else hungry?

I also had surgery on the 12th, and also have been really hungry. I had a couple of days where I felt like I was starving, and every time there was food around my mouth would Water so much it was embarrassing. After doing a little research I decided to make a few changes, and the difference has been huge. I'll tell you what I did in case it helps you as well, but definitely confirm with your NUT.

Today was a really good day, and I felt so much better. First thing I did was switch from generic omeprazole to brand name Prilosec. I read that stomach acid feels just like hunger, and two separate people told me that they felt generic omeprazole wasn't working nearly as well as Prilosec. I don't know if this helped or not but I figured why not try.

The other, bigger difference was really concentrating on Protein heavy foods. I don't know what your NUT recommends at this stage, but when I told mine I was starving, he said, I could have anything that was blended, strained, and of a consistency to be sucked through a straw. (Without actually using a straw)

So my hubby and I made a vegetable stew, heavy on beef, blended it down, several times, thinning with the broth, strained it, and I've been eating that throughout the day. I'm not normally a big meat eater, but my body seems to be craving this Soup, so I believe it's the natural Protein. I'm also eating Greek yogurt, thinned with milk.

The first few days when I was starving, I was eating all of these crummy cream, and canned Soups, which were what my diet sheet recommended for this week. They were high in carbs, and low in protein. I truly believe they were making me miserable. I'm really a carb junky anyway so it makes sense for me to stay away from anything with that type of nutritional profile.

I was initially using skim milk to make my shakes, and thin my yogurt, I switched to 2% milk, and that little bit of fat has helped tremendously with making me feel satiated. I've also blended some low fat cheese with fat free refried Beans, thinned to the right consistency with chicken broth, and strained.

Good luck I know it's so tough to be hungry. I was blindsided by it, as I expected no hunger after surgery.

Sachimom thank you so much for the suggestions! Interesting info about the generic vs name brand as I bought the generic to save a couple bucks. And, Your vegetable stew sounds so yummy I think I may make that too! I made chicken lasagna for my family last night along with a birthday cake for my daughter and everything smelled so delicious!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
