YoungNy...

I am waiting for insurance to deny or approve my surgery, but right now I am convinced I will do it either way. I just had shoulder surgery 4 weeks ago (today) and am facing knee surgery. Those two surgeries according to my doctor is more dangerous. Neither are reversible and are more complicated that the lap band placement. Now hopefully with the Lap Band and weight loss I won't need the knee surgery. I am only 33 and worry about the long term as well, like you, but know that there will be no long term if my health doesn't change here and fast. And I hate to say this, but sometimes you/we have to do things our family don't agree with. They should still love you no matter what. After it is done and you are healthier they will be happy with your choice...

I wish you luck, don't give up the idea, do all of your research, be informed and make an educated decision. My prayers are with you!

I am 40 years old. I had the lapband surgery when I was 39 and I'm down 56 lbs. Now the work begins. The first 50 lbs was a breeze.

I was banded on November 3rd 2006 at age 20. It has been 7 months now and I have lost almost 50 lbs. I am so glad that I decided to have it done at my age because it will allow me to stop so many complications from obesity before it happens.

I am 27 with four kids. I dont know that I personally would have wanted the additional issue to deal with when I was having babies but lots of people do it! I guess I say that because I had some problems with some of my pregnancies.

On the other hand I do so wish i could have those years back of my life that i missed out on things because of my weight. GO YOU!! Do what is best for you, your family will be so proud of you later!

Hey,

I'm 27 and will be banded this month. I think if I would have known about it at your age, I would have done it then. Would have save me some of the depression and the heartaches of trying tons of diets, yo-yoing, and feeling like I've missed out on things.

I am 54 and I wish that I had been banded as soon as it first came out. I don't know why it took me so long to find out about it!

I will be getting banded on July 3rd, and that will be less than a month before I turn 24 (August 2nd). I want to get my weight under control while I'm young and still relatively healthy. I have PCOS, insulin resistance, asthma, high cholesterol (280 the last time it was checked), a hiatal hernia, etc. I have a high rate of heart disease, heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., on both sides of my family. My mom had to have both knees replaced, mainly due to her obesity. To put it bluntly, if I can't get my weight under control, I'm totally screwed. I view this surgery as a preventative measure.

Gday, I was banded when I was 36.

Lauren are you only 24?!!!!:) I thought you were much older. I don't often check people's profiles to see their age. Man I feel like an old lady now at 37.:) Susannah

Yep, I will be 24 in just over a month and a half. I've always been told that I am very mature for my age. I was never one to do all the "teen" stuff. I always felt like I was much older emotionally than the people my age.

Heck, it's not how old you really are that matters, it's how old you feel!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
