Truly don't know what to do

Recommended Posts

So, I realize that we all are having, or have had this surgery to lose weight, amd completely change our relationship with food..but have you considered trying either a regular old milkshake (a small one) with Protein in it, or maybe of cold is an issue, hot chocolate with protein? Just to get your protein in. Sometimes, you have to ingest what you will tolerate, especially if you are starting to feel down. I have done so much reading about the post op, that I am sure what you are experiencing will get better, in the meantime, find something you can tolerate, and go with it. Your mental health is important too. Keep your chin up.

I felt the same way at first because of the ketosis u taste everything different. I also had trouble finding the Protein i liked because they are all sweet and i never cared much for sweets always opting for an appetizer or a second helping rather than dessert. All i can say is i too went thru this and it def gets better, i didnt even want to leave the house or go too far for fear of being away from what i could eat and my Vitamins and fluids. It all passes and u will be fine.

Most important item to take to the hospital is a chapstick. Your lips will be very dry.

Now, foodwise......when I have to eat something that taste badly with Protein powder in it, I will switch it out for something spicey or that has a distict flavor of its own.

For shakes, I will add vanilla extract and sweetener, chocolate Syrup (sugar free) and sweetener, or maybe salsa. One of my favorite foods to hide Protein in is chili.

My Bariatric Advantage AE horse pill stink a** Vitamin is so huge that I have to crush it. It is supposed to have a berry flavor, but it is strong. I have added it to things like sugar free pistacio pudding, cinnamon applesauce, cranberry mixed with prune juice, ground beef with salsa or spaghetti sauce....just anything else with a strong flavor of its own.

A few days after surgery, I was told I could eat anything I tolerated. What really tasted good to me early on was Progresso Potato and Clam Cream Soup, with the solids strained out. Then I added more chicken bouillon to thin it out. Having something to eat that was hot with salt gave me a break from the Protein shakes. My main brand of shakes is powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. I like them, beefed up with malted milk powder, PB2 or sugarless flavorings to vary the flavor.

Hey Jennifer.... I haven't read every post in this thread, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned. You said that everything you eat hits your gag reflex. Any chance you're already full up on fluids before you eat? If I've been drinking fluids and then try to eat, my already-full stomach can't hold it. Then it starts backing up my esophagus until it hits my gag reflex and makes me hiccup until it has to be purged. Just a thought....

Smell strongly affects taste - what if you put your Protein or touched up Soups in a coffee cup (one of the ones like you'd get at 7-11 that have a lid and a tiny hole to drink out of)? It would block the smell. A cup with a lid and straw would do the same thing, but everyone's instructions regarding straws is a little different.

Are you taking anything for the acid? I was told by my dr that the excess acid changes your taste buds so even if you do not feel reflux excess acid might the the problem. I did not read through all the responses sorry if this is a repeat. Good luck!

It truly is normal. It will also pass. It took me three months to get it together. One month of such nausea I could barely eat. Try to stay hydrated. I know it's hard.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
