Does anyone regret getting the sleeve and wish they had the bypass?

Recommended Posts

I am eleven weeks post op sleeve... No regrets. I didn't have any co mobidities. So I chose the sleeve. I started at 289, I am 5'9" tall my current weight is 190.3. I lost 60 pounds of this weight prior to surgery it did not all come off in the last 11 weeks.

I'm 5 months out and I'll say I contemplated the lap band and had it scheduled and switched to sleeve after talking it over with my OB, pcp, and psychiatrist.

I'm so glad I did and no regrets. I didn't look at bypass and I have a lower BMI so I think it was the best choice for me.

I've been a little disappointed in my slow weight loss and have thought a time or two that maybe I should have done more research on the bypass before making my decision. I wouldn't say I regret it, I plan to make it work but I probably could use some more food aversions. bread makes me feel horrible and I sure have no temptation to eat it. with the bypass, I'd probably have more foods that I couldn't tolerate and it would help keep me on track.

I am 10 months out, maintaining below goal, feel great, and no, I've never once wished I had picked any other surgery. I have 1 friend that has been banded for 5 years and another who had bypass 8 years ago. The former has never lost all of her weight and has had emergency surgery when her band slipped. The latter has hit goal and maintained her weight loss well, but has had innumerable issues over the years including dehydration, Vitamin deficiencies, vomiting, dumping, Constipation and heartburn (she takes protonix and Rolaids everyday). My choice was clear after seeing what both of them deal with.

Good heavens, no -- no regrets. (I had the sleeve.)

Did not want either of the other two major WLS options (band or bypass) and their respective baggage.

I'm still happy with the sleeve. Pre-surgery and still today, I don't like the idea of having part of my intestines cut loose and rerouted. I worked with 3 ladies that all had the bypass, and they are all happy with their results. But even after a year, they still had to be VERY careful of what foods they ate to avoid dumping syndrome. I can eat any food with no problem... other than some minor complaints from Frankensleeve. :D

No regrets. I read that the bypass has maintenance and that the gastric sleeve is virtually maintenance free. I'm only 2 weeks out but I feel great and have so much energy.

I'm glad I chose the sleeve instead of the bypass. The complication and success stats for each are not that different, but with the sleeve, you have little or no dumping, and less chance of malnutrition. Plus I heard that some time (maybe a year or two) after the bypass, your body adapts and you begin to absorb more of your calories, while the malabsorption of micronutrients continues.

Two of my sisters had the bypass and both have experienced regain. I'm the first person I know with the sleeve. I'm hoping my results will be better than my sisters' but time will tell.

I'm only a couple of weeks out myself, but i just didn't want the high maintenance that goes with the bypass; Vitamin deficiencies, dumping etc. I would have wanted the super quick drastic weight loss though! Also, I have a family history of diverticulitis and other intestinal issues and I'm only 37; I'd hate to have problems with my intestines a decade from now and wind up with a stoma.

I want to give myself a chance to treat food properly; I have never done that. I am looking forward to being able make better choices with all types of foods and the bypass wouldn't allow for that. I made the right decision for me.

@@April4, although the bypass people lose weight faster in the beginning, after 5 years, both sleeve and bypass patients lost about the same amount of weight. Besides losing slow is better. Less excess skin. I am loving my sleeve.

I have no regrets of having the Sleeve. My cousin's husband & my niece have both had RNY by pass surgery & have gain weight back. My cousin's husband never lost all of his weight & has now gained a huge amount of his lost weight back. My niece lost her weight but has gained a little bit of it back. My cousin has a lapband & has had issues with it. She is the one that suggested the Sleeve because she has a friend that had the Sleeve & has done very well. Also, you don't want to lose your weight really fast like they do with the bypass. Your skin doesn't have any time to adjust. My niece has more sagging skin than I do & I'm 40 years older than she is!!

No regrets! I also did it when I was ready for the surgery. At first I thought I was ready a few years back when the only option for me at the time was the bypass. I was wrong. I am happy that I was forced to wait it out due to better options and more education about the sleeve.

I have no regrets about being sleeved! This was the best decision I have ever made for myself. I thought about bypass, bit like so many others have said, i didn't want anything rerouted or the other things that come with it. I am a little over 3 months post op and I have lost 82 lbs. it has been slow, but definitely worth it. I have gone from a 24W jeans to a 16 misses in 3 months. This journey has been incredible!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
