Surgery and having a cold

Recommended Posts

I've had a bit of the "sniffles" the last week or so. My doc office suggested I try either Zicam or Airborne. My surgery is scheduled for next Thursday (13th).

Today I'm feeling a bit of a headache (day #2 of the liquid diet though). I really, REALLY hope that I'm not getting sick. At what point would they reschedule surgery? Would they reschedule for just a basic cold or would it have to be a full blown nasty chest cold?

If I end up having to reschedule, I'll have to push it out about a month, and then timing isn't great for work... Ugh!!

@@Quest4TheNewMe Sorry your sick! I don't really know the answers to that I do know they would operate on you if you have a temp. Trust me this is not the kind of surgery you would want to have if you have a cough ect....you would be in pain for sure! Maybe this will pass before Thursday, hopefully. You really do want to be "healthy" before surgery it will make the process a lot smoother for you. Good luck!! I hope this clears up for you!

I got sick a few days before surgery too. I blasted my cold with Vitamin C, Zicam, and watered down OJ (since that's allowed on the liquid phase). Generally they would reschedule your surgery if you can't breathe easily out of your nose. When you're intubated during surgery it doesn't matter much since they're breathing for you, but when they extubate you you're still not really awake and you need to be able to protect your own airway. If you can't breathe out of your nose and your throat is clogged up, you're not conscious enough to wake yourself up and cough to breathe, like you would be if you were just sick and trying to sleep at home. If you just have a headache and a scratchy throat with a little bit of the sniffles, they won't care. The big thing is you need to be able to breathe when you're not awake enough to correct your posture or cough to clear your nose and throat. You're going to get a ton of antibiotics after surgery, so that may likely clear up any cold you have anyway. I went into surgery feeling a little stuffy, but I left three days later feeling like I got hit by a truck- but no signs of a cold at all!

Okay, thanks for the info! Right now, my chest is completely clear, my throat feels just a smidge funny but not really scratchy, and even though I have a bit of the sniffles, I can breathe completely fine through my nose... Let's hope this doesn't develop into anything more!!

During my pre op appointment the nurse told me they would not perform my surgery if I was sick and had a fever. Of course I glazed over what she was trying to explain to me and simply told myself I won't get sick! Lol. Nothing, save the world ending, was going to keep me from being on that table on July 18th! But rest up and take as much fluids as you can tolerate. Best.

What can you take if you get a cold after you have surgery. I had surgery on Monday and now I'm sick with a bad cold. Help!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
