My first post! I'm 42 and a male starting at 397 goal of 225. I'm scheduled for the sleeve on Nov. 19. I have researched until I feel like I go in circles a bit. I'm aware of the pros and cons to both for the most part but I am curious to hear some success stories of others with higher bmi's and the sleeve. It seems to me that either rny or the sleeve will just be a tool and ultimately success is based on developing healthier habits. Other than the "penalty" of dumping as a deterrent is there any other reason I could not be just as successful with the sleeve? I can't find as much research on the sleeve so hoping to get some more insight here.

As far as I know the biggest difference between the sleeve & bypass is that with the sleeve the weight loss is slower. Of course the surgeries are different, but outcome wise the major difference is the rate of expected loss.

I was sleeved on 2/28/13. I was 53 and weighed 325 at my pre-op appt. i'm very tall, 6'1", so my goal is 220, which is still considered "overweight". So I got down to 225 but haven't made it to my goal yet. Still working on it. In the beginning I lost very quickly and my rate of loss slowed around 8 months post-op.

I never took the rate of weight loss into consideration when I chose the sleeve. I was initially going to have the RNY. I chose to have the sleeve because I felt it was a better choice for me. I really didn't like the idea of having my small intestine cut and rerouted. Also the dumping syndrome was a deterrent. However some people still get dumping with the sleeve too. I've had some very sugary or fatty things cause me to have nausea and diarrhea, especially if I ate it on an empty stomach.

Some people may lose more rapidly with the RNY but it seems like the difference is pretty minimal.

I think you have to go with your gut (pardon the pun) feeling about what is right for you. Everyone's experience is unique. You'll do great with either surgery!

You hit the nail on the head! Whichever option you choose, a healthier eating habit is a must for success. WLS is just a tool for us to get started on the right path. I am no expert on Gastric Sleeve nor am I an expert on RNY. I can give you experience. I had a really high starting BMI. I ultimately chose RNY over sleeve because of the malabsorption aspect. My cravings for "bad stuff" - sweets, high fats, fried foods, etc are gone. I have yet to experience dumping either.

You can be really successful at either surgery if you put in the work.

As for me, I did not want a bypass because I did not want to re-route my plumbing. I did not want a band because I did not want a port on my abdomen. So I chose the sleeve and am happy with the result so far. At ten months out I have had no dumping, no more reflux and sleep a lot better.

I think it awesome that you are doing your home work. I wish you good luck and good health.

@@Miss Mac - I was the same. I didn't want to do the Bypass and reroute my plumbing. I was also told the band was the least successful and many end up having it replaced with the sleeve.

I hope everyone does their own homework and decides what works best for them.

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
