Hi everyone! I'm new here! I just had a consultation with my Dr. and I'm looking to get sleeved on 1-2-2015. I had a friend who was recently sleeved and she was put on a 2 week liquid diet. I asked about this at my consultation and the Dr said it's not necessary, I just have to eat light the day before the surgery. Did anyone else not have to do the 2 week pre-op diet? Also, what's the psych evaluation like? Thanks, in advance, for your help!

@Big_MamaGreat questions! I meet w/surgeon next week and I, too, have wondered about the pre-op diet -- seems like many require, sometimes for 2 weeks (ugh), and some do not -- also, does anyone know if a bowel prep is required before surgery? Thanks!

@@Big_Mama Hello! I had to do the 2 weeks. Every surgeon is different. Luckily I didn't find it to be very hard at all and I Feel like it helped to prepare me for the small amounts of foods and liquids after my surgery( which was Monday) psych evals vary also. Mine was just a few questions asked and a 150-ish question test that they graded and went over with me in the office. No big deal! good luck!

@@della street, I asked my Dr about bowl prep and he said it's not necessary. It would be interesting to know what other Dr's responses were.

@@Elode thank you! I'm thinking about doing the diet to help me prepare for the surgery, myself. I'm scared of the psych test because I'm an emotional eater, and I read somewhere that they will deny you if you do a lot of emotional eating. =/

I was pleasantly surprised when I too didn't have the 2 week pre op diet. I asked the doctor about needing to "shrink the liver" for the surgery, and he told me that at a recent conference he had gone to, the result was so minimal that it didn't really make a difference one way or the other. I was Clear Liquids the day before, and nothing after midnight the day of surgery. It was awesome because I had a great dinner out with my hubby 2 days before surgery of steak, loaded baked potato and beer :)

Good! I'm on the...um...older side (47) so it's a little slower than some, but I just hit ONEderland this week! So 37lbs down since August 22nd! Slow and steady wins the race :) Good Luck and good healing on your upcoming surgery!

I had RNY and was prepared to do the 2 week liquid diet but I was not required either. I did 3 days of Protein shakes prior to surgery with no problems.

As far as the psych evaluation, I found it to be a complete joke and waste of money ( I had to pay out of pocket)

I filled out a questionnaire with no less than 500 questions that worded the same question 100 different ways. There would be one weird question interspersed in all the questions. I'm guessing the Doctor only focused on those answers. Who knows. I did read every one and answer every one completely honestly. I wasn't going to have anything or anyone derail my surgery. Best of luck with your pre-op prep!!

My pre-op diet was 3 days. They psych eval was a walk in the park..the doctor asked questions & I answered. None of the "problem questions" really applied to me. Good luck!

@tamg26k looks like we go to the same office - Dr. Ricks did my surgery :)

Nothing but good things to say about the office. I almost attended a seminar with Dr. Ricks but got Dr. Scott instead.

Have you attended any support group meetings?

My psychologist was looking to see if I was mentally ready for the surgery. He also wanted to make sure I had support and was realistic about my expectations. It was helpful to get his prespective about my doctor and what life may be like post surgery.

Thanks, everyone, for your input! How is everyone doing post-op so far, and how long has it been since your surgery?

I am doing really well at almost 3 months out. I can handle most foods. I am a slow loser at about 2-3 lbs a week but I will take what loss I can get.

Barriej9 2-3 lbs a week is great! Keep that up and you'll be down 100+ lbs in a year! Congrats!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
