Thoughts on sugar free?

Recommended Posts

There is a product called Xylitol. It is a 100% natural sweetener made from birch trees. It is as close to white sugar as I have ever tasted and actually is white. The problem is that it is so expensive. But if your pocket book will allow it is a great substitute. It has a low glycemic index which means it doesn't effect your blood sugar as much as sugar. No BS spikes. One important thing to know about it is that it is extremely toxic to dogs in very small amounts. (like a teaspoon!) I have 2 dogs so this is something I am very careful about. Talk to your nutritionists about it. Some of them don't even know about it.

I'm glad you mentioned the dog toxicity. It is WAY worse than chocolate, which everyone seems to know about. I am a vet tech and have seen a few cases. One was a Great Dane than ate a pack of Trident sugar free gum. Fortunately, the owners caught him right away and we were able to induce vomiting. But when we looked it up, even that small amount of xylitol in that big of a dog exceeded safe levels. So be careful if you have it around the house if you have dogs! (BTW, cats are fine..it's not toxic to them)

I've never liked sugar free anything! I've been adhering to my manual as given by my surgeon but I think the sugar free stuff tastes funny and makes me thirsty. Is there anyone who has not used any sugar free foods and sweeteners and had success?

I am allergic to artificial sweeteners, stevia & food dyes. I use organic sugar, raw honey, date paste or maple Syrup. Since my surgery I am just very careful with what I eat and make sure I don't go overboard with it. I've recently been eating oranges again. It's natural sugar and I get a bit of Fiber with it so for me the nutritional payoff is worth it. I'm only 7 weeks out but so far I'm losing just fine.

Also sugar produces a hunger hormone that is nearly eradicated during the sleeve procedure as it's produced in the part of ur stomach that is cut away. But the more sugar u eat it produces more? Something like that.

Fake sugar is worse because it tricks the body. In a world without artificial sweeteners, a taste of something sweet preps the brain and the gut for digestion of incoming calories. When the calories don't show, as happens with artificial sweeteners, those metabolic responses don't fire the way they should. Insulin doesn't increase; hormones that increase the feeling of fullness and satisfaction aren't triggered; and the brain doesn't get a feeling of reward from the dopamine that sugars release.

I had a horrible reaction to Sugar Free Chocolate pudding with sugar free cool whip last week. Within 20 min I had belly cramping, I fell asleep for an hour and then woke again doubled over in pain...I had dumping syndrome for sure. Pain, sweats, chills, shaking, diarrhea, vomiting....it lasted for 3 hours! I will never eat that stuff ever again. I'm not a sleeve patient, but I had bypass a couple of weeks ago.

I was going to do the Stevia. But I decided not too. I do get the fat free yogurt though. If I want to add sweetness, I will use real deal Amish honey. If I have a sweet tooth, I will have a Protein Shake or bar. Better yet, I even made my own Protein Bars.< /p>

There are Protein powders made with stevia which is all natural but is an acquired taste. I think jay Robb is the name of one company.

If you are allergic to rag weed they stevia may cause you problems. The stevia plant is in the same plant family.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
