I am four weeks post-op and haven't lost an ounce since the first week. So it's been three weeks and no movement on the scale. Starting to worry and get really discouraged. Has this happened to anyone and this early after surgery??

Where did you get your surgery? What did your surgeon say during your followup?

Close. I lost about 20 pounds pre-op, and then gained 12 of it back from fluids in the hospital. It took me two weeks to lose that, and then I was into the third week stall. It wasn't until the fourth week that I started losing again.

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or more. But don't worry -- after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

That was a great article. I am three weeks out and did not seem to be losing. It is great to have an explanation.

Thank you all for your responses and for that article. It's made me feel a lot better!

I got my surgery done at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. I talked to my surgeon at two weeks and he said its normal to stall but I started getting concerned when another week went by, and then another week. But thank goodness! I really didn't want to start regreting this decision... Thanks again for your support!

I also stalled at a week out for about a week. But I was on a liquid diet 4 weeks pre-op. I think I was just due for a stall. Then at about 3 1/2 weeks out I stalled for 3 weeks.

I can tell you that unless you are eating sugar and carbs instead of Protein then you will get past the stalls and the pounds will fall off! Even with 4 weeks of stalling during the past 3 mths I have lost a total of 48lbs so far. Stalls are frustrating, I know, but it will pass.

Hang in there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
