kelly lynn 19 Posted November 5, 2014 So as I'm reading through the different questions I'm seeing that so many people have had to or are doing a pre-op liquid diet of 2+ weeks. My doctor is saying 1 day. Why is there such a difference?? Getting a little nervous as to why I only have 1 day liquids...
Jonathan Blue 311 Posted November 5, 2014 Every surgeon is a little different. I admit I have not heard of only doing one day. Perhaps you should talk to your doctor to ask his reasoning. He should be open and honest with you about his methods. I only had to do one week of liquid but had to do a modified diet a week before that. The reason behind the time and even longer times is to clear out your system and to shrink your liver so it makes working around in your stomach a little easier. One thought I just had was if he was having you take something called Miralax the day before. It is the surgical equivalent of a roto rooter lol. I know it sounds kind of gross, but it is used to rapidly clear out your system. It is used pretty commonly for other procedures. If he is not concerned about your liver, then it could be the option he is choosing because it would be easier on you in the long run. My best advice would be to just ask though. Your doctor and his office are there as a resource. They are working on you and you have every right to know what he is planning on doing and how.
HappygoSusan 296 Posted November 5, 2014 I had no pre op liquid diet, nor any other restrictions unless you count the normal don't eat after X hour the night before and nothing (no liquids) after midnight. I read other's post about the struggle, and I always Am thankful I didn't have it. Maybe it's a starting BMI thing. Mine was under 40. Susan
MsUjima 109 Posted November 5, 2014 I didn't do a liquid diet at all. I did 10 days controlled portion diet using frozen diet food and 2 shakes per day.
micmt 120 Posted November 5, 2014 Frm my understanding its more to shrink a fatty liver, more overweight the fattier the liver. It's also to get you in the mindset of liquid diet right after surgery I surgery. I had 10 day liquid diet. And since I'm now used to just shakes and such I feel I will have a much easier time adjusting.
jaydelouise 0 Posted November 5, 2014 Im on day 2 of 10day Optifast shake morning and lunch and a protien and veg/salad dinner. Have a massive headache from sugar and carb withdrawals! But all will be worth it and yes the pre op is to shrink liver so it can be moved aside easier and safer during surgery.
ThinnerMe2015 14 Posted November 7, 2014 The pre- op diet or liquid diet is that just like broth or what? Do the surgeon give you a list of things you can have, seem like broth and shakes are the main liquids for a liquid diet. If shakes are one of the sources what kind do you all prefer cause I will be at this step I hope soon.
Ldimples 73 Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) My doctor told me it was based on my BMI. He said I did not have to do it but he recommends that I do. So I decide to do 1 week of liquids during the day and some type of Protein at night like eggs or chicken cutlets with a veggie, no carbs. That is what I am on now. For the second week, I will do total liquid diet. Based on my research it will be best for me now and after the surgery. skinnyme123 13 Posted November 8, 2014 My surgeon had me do the liquid diet for two days. He said through years of doing this, There wasn't enough difference to warrant any longer (for his patients. . not judging any others!)
Dhdhshhshd 42 Posted November 9, 2014 My surgeon requires a two week pre-op low fat, high Protein, and no carb/sugar eating plan to jump start your weight loss and shrink the liver to make surgery easier. Laprascopic is the goal and they need room to work; shrinking the liver apparently really helps this. Good luck!
tanya131313 5 Posted April 10, 2015 Today I just started my 2 weeks liquid diet and my surgery is April 23rd. Question? My friend had bypass done in February and she told me that was ate hard boiled egg whites (no yolk) throughout the 2 week liquid diet. She said her surgery was fine and the doctor said everything looked good. Has anyone else tried egg whites or other alternatives?
wildGoose 207 Posted April 11, 2015 My liquid diet was in the hospital. I went home to puréed foods. It worked out really well. after a month I was on to chewing, and I have become very good at chewing. ????
