Best protein drinks? Clear, whey powders, and liquids?

Recommended Posts

I am having surgery on November 25th. I would like to have some advice on which Protein powders/drinks are the best for after surgery. I don't want to feel completely grossed out by what I'm drinking. Any advice?

I really like the Bariatric Advantage brand shake powders. It was what my surgeon had me on pre-op diet. I've just continued to use up what was left over from my pre-op diet. The Orange Cream flavor is my favorite, tastes just like an Orange Julius from Dairy Queen. The reason I like them is due to the mild taste (not too sweet).

I've tried several different "Ready to Drink" Protein shakes (Oh Yeah!, EAS, Muscle Milk, Pure Protein) and they all tasted too sweet for me. My favorite is Premier Protein (chocolate flavor). I can only find them at Sam's Club, but they may be available elsewhere as well.

GENEPRO Protein has saved me since surgery as I could not handle the sweetness of the shakes. It's tasteless and mixes well into anything.

Love Premier Protein chocolate Shakes!!! I also bought Unjury Unflavored Protein to add more protein to anything. Currently, I am drinking Muscle Milk Light and adding 20 grams of protein(Unjury Unflavored) to make a 40g of Protein Shake in the morning. I love the Muscle Milk Light too! I drank these prior to my surgery for a few years.

Ray Robb's Egg White Protein Powder is awesome. With lactose intolerance and celiac, this was the answer to my prayers post-surgery. eBay has the best bargain and prefer unflavored.

I like the Syntrax Nectars. Wide variety of flavors, including unflavored.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
