Where To Start?

Recommended Posts

First Post(of many I hope)

I just decided to start this journey. My question is where do I start? Do I go to my primary Dr? Or should I contact a Bariatric center directly? The only thing I have done is called my benifit center and was told my insurance covers if deamed medically necessary.

Any information will be greatly appriacted.

Thanks Delana

I agree. Talk with your primary care physician and ask them for a referral to a local bariatric surgeon. This is the first step in an amazing journey. You will not regret it. I want to encourage you as you prepare to check out my blog at the link below. It has recipes, encouragement, and information about how to deal with everything that is happening to you. I especially want to encourage you to check out the three posts I did on How I Prepared for Surgery. It is never too early to start thinking about these steps. I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us informed of your progress.

If you have any additional questions or need anything at all don't hesitate to contact me at the links below. I am an open book and here to help.

My insurance didn't require a referral, so I just went to an information session at my local hospital and made an appointment directly with the surgeon. You can shop around information sessions if there are several in your area and find a doctor you like. Then check out his reviews online (google his/her name and reviews). I don't know if my personal doctor would have agreed with my decision but he's very happy with the progress I've made.

You might also want to look and see if any hospital in your area is a bariatric center of excellence. Or what hospital is in network for your insurance.

I went to see the surgeon first. I didn't even have a PCP at that time.

I just decided to start this journey as well. I finally have insurance and just got a doctor but haven't met him yet. I have an appointment tomorrow to meet him and discuss some issues I've been having. I'm also going to bring up WLS and see what he thinks. Hopefully I can get the ball rolling after that...

Thanks for the responses. I contacted a bariatric program. I had to participate in a free seminar and fill out some forms. Once I return the forms they will contact my inurance and we will see what i need to do from there forward. It is so exciting even taking this small step! Quick question my bmi is like 56 and is my only diagnosed if you will reason so get this surgery. Is it safe for me to loose weight before this whole process is done? I would have to loose almost 100 lbs to be under the 40 bmi cut off.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
