psych eval mmpi2

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for my psych eval (including the mmpi2) in a couple of weeks and I'm super nervous about it. I've read in the forums that you can be denied clearance if you show signs of depression and/or anxiety. But who gets to the stage in their life when they're seeking surgery for weight loss without having some depression/anxiety issues?

I did the MMPI2 too. Honestly, it was a super easy process. The first appt was about 30 minutes of weight loss attempts and what I was hoping to accomplish with surgery. Then, too the test. One month later, we reviewed the results of the test, revisited realistic surgery expectations, and off I went. It was totally no big deal.

I agree. Nothing to fret about. I have suffered with clinical depression and anxiety for 30 years (I've addressed both) - took the MMPI2 with no problems. They don't expect us to be perfect. I don't think many people get to the point of needing bariatric surgery without having some issues.

Thanks for the advice! ! It's just that they told me to be prepared to be there for 3 to 4 hours. Anyone else took that long?

If you're doing the MMPI2, it's 567 multiple choice questions. It takes some time...

Some depression and anxiety are ok. If you're so depressed that you can't get out of bed most days then it's probably not in your best interest to have surgery until the depression is treated. With the MMPI2 they are looking for evidence of severe mental illness that will interfere with a persons ability to follow through with what's needed to be successful after surgery. The test has 250+ questions and seems repetitive but it's designed that way to check for consistency in answers. The test is also designed to detect if people are faking good. I've taken it twice, but not during this process.

The test has about 570 question. They are all yes, no, multiple choice questions. They are just trying to make sure that you are stable. They need to know you are not depressed and thinking about suicide. I have anxiety and am on medication for it, so clearly that is not a issues. It is the levels. Half my appt was filling out the test the other half was sitting with the psychiatrist and talking about my home life, decisions I made in life, they are really just trying to make sure you are mentally in a good place. There is really nothing to be nervous about. The guy that I spoke with said he has never denied anyone. He said he has had questions and even recommendations, but never denied them. My appointment was about an hour- hour and a half.
