Retching, chills after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had sugery yesterday, and I am retching several times a day. Nothing comes out, but it is very painful. I usually have it after taking any kind of medication. My stomach is also doing a lot of spasming in the form of hiccup-like jumps, also painful. Is that normal?

I am also FREEZING COLD. The heat is on and my husband is sweating it out, and I'm wearing several layers and a hat, and shaking.

Did anyone else experience this?

@@mnmlst Do you have a temperature? I don't know if that's normal or not for this surgery but the nurse in me wants to check your temp and call your Dr!

If you're having problems on certain meds, they might be able to change them. Any kind of scrunching of our tummy's right now is going to hurt. That includes getting up and down and the wretching as well. Have you asked about changes in meds? Maybe you need something stronger? I didn't feel cold until I was home. They kept my hospital room so warm and I actually got too warm and asked them to turn it down. Now that I'm home, I am more chilly than I was before surgery. I promise each day gets better! Hang in there!

Yes, I did have a low grade fever, but it's gone now. I called my surgeon and talked to him. Feeling much better now. It's amazing how a few hours can make a difference.

Each person is different, but anesthesia makes me really hot after surgery. It could just be your body reacting to that or the medications they have you on.

I didn't have spasms in my stomach, but a friend did and they put her on an antispasmodic to stop them.

Hope you heal quick!

Welcome to the losers bench!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
