If you're not getting all your liquids in yet, put yourself on some sort of drinking schedule so it doesn't happen. Drink an ounce every five minutes, for instance. You have to really work at this. It won't happen "naturally." The hunger hormone ghrelin that your old stomach is no longer producing all regulates your perception of thirst. No ghrelin, no thirsty. So you have to drink anyway.

If you can't sleep, take an Ambien or benadryl or something that will put help you zonk out. Your body needs the rest. And your body is still pretty freaked out by what it's been through and what it's going through.

Your body will suffer if you don't start getting in all your Protein pretty quick (60 grams at least).

Consider everything you're supposed to be eating and drinking right now medicine -- a prescription. You aren't expected to enjoy it or like it. You just have to DO it.

And the good news ... it's all going to get easier and easier very soon.

@@stob23 Since you are getting some liquids, especially your chicken broth, get yourself some unflavored Protein powder and put it in everything! It doesn't taste like anything and it will help you tremendously in getting more Protein into your system.

It would also be a great idea to get some coconut Water no pulp and drink some as it is a natural hydrator. Or some G2 Gatorade.. or mineral water...All good got dehydration. :0

I had my pre-op on Friday and they told me if I was experiencing those symptoms to call them. So find your surgeon's after hours number and call!

I am 5 days out.

It is vital to keep a Water log. Find a system that works for you. Right now I have a note book where I have times and tick marks. Water drinking is a full time job at this point. If you are not sleeping you are drinking. Mind you it takes me 5 to 6 sips to drink 1 oz in about 15 minutes. What worked well for me yesterday ( I made it 40 oz for the day) is to have a glass with 5 ounces. I drew a line in sharpie on a wine glass. My goal is to drink that in an hour. In 10 hours is should get 50oz. I also drink anytime I wake up during the night. I make sure I stay awake 15 minutes to drink my 1 oz. My favorite drink solution has been 1/4 no sugar added apple juice, a tablespoon pedialite and the rest water. I feel the sweetness in the apple and the salty of the pedialite and my tummy likes it. Diluted Crystal Light and Low salt broth (with a scoop of GENEPRO unflavored protein) are also yummy. sugar free popsicles are also good but I too can hardly tolerate the sweetness in the vanilla and chocolate Protein shakes.

Having said all that if you have not been able to get enough liquids and you feel very sick then you will have to go to emergency room and have them place you on IV for fluids. Call your doctor of course. They have a 24 hour service answering calls. It is an outpatient procedure and they will likely only admit you as inpatient if you are dangerously dehydrated and require days of fluids. Even in ER I would be working my fluids because when you get home you still have to work at it.

I never imagined drinking enough fluids was such a hard job but it is. Right now it is even more important then sleep.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
