How long off work?

Recommended Posts

I just called my doctor office regarding how much time I should take off work. I was told for sedentary work 2 weeks. That doesn't sound like much healing time. How long were you off work?

I was off for only 2 weeks; it was enough time, I didn't think the surgery was difficult at all. I had no issues drinking Water, or keeping anything down. I've been so lucky and had no bad effects from the surgery. I had my surgery almost 6 months ago.

I have a very active job...lifting, bending, squatting, driving, walking, standing all day. I was back part time (30 hours) after 7 days and full time (40-60 hrs) at 2 weeks. I did have a 20 pound lifting restriction for 3 weeks....the only thing I "cheated" because I was lifting 60 pounds at 18 days postop. I was tired and had to make sure I had plenty of Protein Shakes and liquids on hand, but had no problems doing my job.

When I asked my surgeon he said that I should take the 6 weeks off and fill out the EDD form. I'm only a cashier at sears but I do a lot of lifting because I work in the hardware department. I guess you can base it on how you feel, everyone is different. I've talked to some people who said 6 weeks was not enough and then some people say they could go back in 2-4 weeks

I'm taking 2 weeks, just to be on the safe side, and when I return I plan on asking my staff to lift for me. It's going to be tough, though, because I will be around food all day, but I think I can handle it and if not, I'll strategize with my NUT.

I was off 1 1/2 weeks. The surgery was nothing. In fact, when the surgeon came in to see me the following morning, I accused her of not doing anything to me. I felt no pain what so ever. (I had the sleeve). The only side affect I had was, I was tired. But that has to do with any type of surgery. I do have a desk job, so that did make it easier. I felt guilty taking any more time off knowing I didn't need it.

Hi. I have a a desk job, and first though I would take two weeks off. My surgeon said 4 weeks. His reasoning was not for pain or immobility, but to give me a chance to get used to eating. It is a lot of hard work after surgery. I listened to him and I so glad I did! New emotions, eating/drinking patterns, exercise choices and insomnia (common in surgery patients) would have been too much to juggle with work. If you have the time built up at work, use it. You won't regret it.

I am planning to take 6weeks off so I can go through all the post op eating stages. I'm going back to work after I reach the "regular" meal stage.

I am getting sleeved on November 26th, although I have a desk job (Nail Technician) that time of the year is super busy for me.

Being a chair renter (I have my own business) I am only taking 3 weeks off because December is where I make the most money. My Surgeon said 5 weeks but I just can't afford to take that much off. Thankfully I have amazing clients who have been so supportive and I'm sure they will bare with me through this.

Good luck to everyone!

Sheena :-)

I had surgery on Thursday, September 25th and I went back to work Sunday, September 28th for a few hours. I was back full time the next day. So basically I was off three days. I have a desk job and I was completely fine. A little tired but otherwise great. I have had zero issues since surgery. Down 31 pounds since then.

I work 2 jobs, neither require any lifting per say, the main job has quite a bit of walking. I was sleeved on 10/6/14. Back to work on 10/13/14 both jobs on 10/15/14. I have no regrets. I am not one to sit home.

I was very fortunate, I had very little complications. I started walking a mile a day on the 13th. This week I go for my one month visit and hope to be able to do a bit more. Good Luck. Each person is different. Go with your gut.

Wow you guys are go getters :) I would think you would be off at least 4 weeks.

Not really. I am partners in a small business, so no work=no income. No such thing as sick leave, paid time off or vacation days for me. I wanted to take 2 weeks, but work got too busy so I had to suck it up and go back at 1 week. Because I did it around the holidays I really only missed 4 days of work. But seriously, I would have been bored to death taking 4-6 weeks off because other than being tired, I felt fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
