It's almost time! Surgery scheduled for Monday (Nov. 3)

Recommended Posts

Soooo...my new birthday is rapidly approaching. 9:55am, Nov. 3, 2014 is when I will have my surgery. Having the gastric sleeve and a hiatal hernia fixed at the same time is starting to give me the shakes. I've been through major surgery before, I had my spleen removed a few years ago. I got through that pretty easily, but just the thought of having these two things are starting to make me a little uneasy. I trust God and know all will go well, but still....
Anyway, the question I have is, has anyone tried the New whey liquid Protein or the muscle milk powder. My NUT didn't know what muscle milk was and couldn't give me an answer on if it was okay to drink (even though I've been using it for about 6 mos now). I forgot to ask about the New Whey liquid. What has worked for you during your pre-op and post-op if you've recently had your surgery?

my friend who was sleeved swears by muscle milk. however, we cannot start it until week 2 because our surgeon wants only Clear liquids for the first 7 days and muscle milk isn't clear.

my nerves are erratic and everywhere too...i go in on the 17th at 7:30 AM for my sleeve...EEK!

Ask your surgeon because they might know what it is or they may just tell you it's fine as long as you get the recommended amount of Protein in.

My doc n Nut were flex able on Protein drinks provided they met certain criteria -per serving

1. At least 25 grams of Protein

2. Less then 8 grams of sugar

Every doc/ NUT has different recommendations and diet guidelines both pre and post op. While surfing this site you will find the vast differences.

I have used Bariatric Advantage Meal Replacement, CVS brand protein and GNC so far, I'm just 6 weeks post op. They all were fine.

Haven't looked at muscle milk yet, I would just check the contents. I also read in a few places that our body can not process more then 20 grams of protein at a time. "food for thought" when choosing more expensive high Protein Drinks.

Good luck with everything !!!!

Thanks everyone! I will keep you posted on how I'm doing. One scoop of muscle milk powder is something like 16g of Protein and 2g of sugar. I did have a chance to check into it again and it is approved by the NUT. Tomorrow is the big day so there's a lot that I have to get done. I'll check back in a week or so.

P.S. On the Protein powder... In the beginning (1st few weeks) you are not going to be getting a lot into yourself. So you really want to choose a Protein Drink that is a "complete meal" as far as Vitamins and minerals ????

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
