Wearing a medical bracelet after bypass surgery

Recommended Posts

I may have missed something important in my research for having my GBS. I see in one of the forums that quote, " Most bypass patients wear medical bracelets after surgery. " it was said because of the possibility of a doctor or paramedic running something down your throat and perforating the pouch. I never though of this and therefore I don't have a medical Bracelet. My question is do I as a bypass patient need to wear a bracelet and do others? Thanks in advance for any replies.

That sounds like something I posted. lol

Here in Toronto during orientation they tell us we should be prepared to buy a medical alert Bracelet before surgery. I was really surprised when I heard that. But they explained why and then it made perfect sense.

You definitely don't want someone blindly putting a tube down your throat or giving you any NSAIDs and include any other allergies you may have, so giving emergency personnel a heads up is an excellent idea.

You know I just would have never thought of that and my surgeons never said it, either. I am glad for the OP starting this thread! =)

As a single woman, I have a brief synopisis of my medical info in two places:

1) in my wallet--in the first clear plastic 'wallet photo' thing someone would see when they open my wallet; and

2) in my car--in the glove compartment, taped to the back wall of it; and also taped inside the lid of the middle console compartment. These two are bigger and have a bit more info--like friends to call, and my neighbor's contact info. Also, the hospital where I'm on staff.

On it, I have my name, blood type, NKA [no known allergies]; a short list of any surgery, medical conditions; meds; two emergency contact names, and a doctor's name/number. You might want to just do that, instead of wearing a Bracelet. Personal choice. Granted, my placements won't help me when away from my wallet or my car; so a bracelet may be your choice.

I bought my medical Bracelet from www.laurenshope.com. It is beautiful and I get compliments on it. Mine says:

Name

No blind NG tube

Severe NSAID allergy

ICE (emergency phone number)

I wear it every day.

I just checked out the page. I love them! I think I'll be ordering more than one bracelet to go with the alert plate! Which one did you get if I may ask?

My husband is a first responder and you need to have your med id in your body. in 14 years he never looked in glove compartments or trunks or wallets. ..they dont have time. They are only looking at you and keeping you alive. Sometimes a car accident the purse or wallet is no where to be found as well and they don't know its for you. And if you are in a hotel or house fire they still won't have this info. A on person id is the way to go

Has anyone ordered off ETSY? I ordered a cuff Bracelet off of ETSY and am waiting for it to arrive!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/159759972/medical-alert-id-bracelet-personalized?ref=hp_mod_rf

I got this one because the skinnier one wouldn't fit all my stuff! I got all of the writing on the inside and a caduceus on each cuff end.

Wow, I'm glad I checked out the boards today. My husband and 2 best friends have all had the surgery and never have I heard anything about the need for the bracelets. Very interesting and something we definitely have to think about. Thanks everyone!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
