Hi everyone

I had my surgery a week ago and already have about a million questions. I don't know anyone else, personally, that has had the surgery. I'm hoping someone who has had could help me out.

I guess my biggest question is about the pain. I know everyone is different, but I'm surprised I'm still in as much pain. Any tips on how to help once the meds run out? Thanks!

Which surgery did you have?

Was it laparoscopic? Mine was and I didn't have much pain after the first couple of days. My pain was mostly due to the left over gas they use to inflate the abdomen, once that was out of my system I was good.

It was laparoscopic. I'm hoping that maybe the pain is from Constipation or something. But my left side hurts every time I stand up or walk. And the incisions on the side hurt to the touch as well while all the rest don't hurt at all.

If this continues in the next few days I would call your doctor and talk with him about. It could be a sign of something more serious. At this point it is probably just post op healing. What kind of pain medications does the doctor have you on? Mine preferred oral Percocet. It worked wonders for me, but you need to be religious about taking it every 4 hours like clockwork, even at night. This pain is a lot like falling off a cliff. You never want to medication to fully wear off or down you go: and fast! after about the first 7 days I started reducing the dosage little by little every day, still taking it every 4 hours though. Then after about 5 more days I started toying with waiting longer between doses until I didn't need it anymore.

The pain medication is there to reduce the pain so you can function and move a little. This will help you heal faster and prevent pneumonia. If it is not working, then talk to your doctor about getting you something stronger and use the fear of complication as the valid argument for it.

I hope this helps. Your pain will go away before too long and you will be able to begin enjoying your new and amazing life. This is just a small step on your journey. Take this time to prepare for all of the amazing things you will be doing in the coming year!

its the same for me. I screamed this morning it was so hard to get out of bed and I'm 2 weeks post op. I might have to just go in to emergency although I've been avoiding it. I got rear ended by a drunk driver Sunday so that didn't help either.

Thanks everyone my RN called to check on me today. Sounds like something a simple enema (TMI!) will take care of. Thank goodness. The pain should be gone in a few days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
