I will be having surgery spring 2015 and I am trying to increase my Protein intake prior to surgery so that by the time I have my surgery it won't be such a challenge. I am a vegetarian so Protein intake is already a struggle.

What are some of the best sources (vegetarian) of protein that you have found and what are your favorite protein powders?

Thanks!

Dairy and eggs are a good source of Protein because they also contain amino acids which your body needs to build with the Protein.< /p>

(Any animal protein is more complete than other forms of protein because it has already got the complementary amino acids present).

Of course after animal Proteins good sources are; nuts, seeds, legumes and soy products are rich in protein too.

Some people recommend hummus as a great food, its tasty, easy to make and has great protein content.

I'm no scientist, so my apologies to anyone who wishes to correct the terminology this generally unofficial information....

Animal protiens are best if you have any leeway in your choices. Also, Greek Yogurt has a variety of flavored. Dannon Light and Fit is low in carbs too. It helps with any desire you may have for fruit too. You can also get goo Protein Bars (whey protein). Again make sure they are low in sugar. Sugar alcohol as a sweetener is okay in the bars. Atkins and other some other brands are good.

Try Quest bars they have 20 gr of Protein (tip: microwave them 10 sec. and they taste better). The Vitamin Shoppe has tons of Protein Shakes that might help you. Legumes, black Beans also have protein and soy. You should be also have an appointment with a nutrition specialist before your surgery that should guide you on what to eat.

I'm doing the same, trying to up my Protein. I found these great protein (already mixed) drinks at GNC. They have 25 grams of protein and super yummy. My doctor says Greek yogurt is also a good source.

I was a vegetarian for about 15 years but introduced meat back in my diet about 2 years ago. I found that being a vegetarian I was only getting about 10-20 grams of Protein a day. I started out on the shakes and powders but gradually got off of those for no reason at all. This was the reason for my lack of Protein. I was pretty lazy in that department.

Some other foods that are good

TVP (textured vegetable protein)

edemame

Eggbeaters

refried Beans

tofu

soy

These are just some of the things I ate early on when I became vegetarian. I found, later on, that my food choices were not the best and changed my diet.

Best of luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
