newbie and just starting process

Recommended Posts

Hi! I have been reading the boards for a week or two and decided to introduce myself. I am 51, 280 lbs, BMI 43, with diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea. I am a nurse and have 2 kids, 4 dogs and 3 cats...quite a wild household. I am just amazed at the success and support in this group. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

I had my 1st MD appt last week. I am in the process of scheduling the nutritionist and psychologist. I have to see a pulmonologist and have an endoscopy. And, of course, insurance has to approve. I don't think that will be a problem. I have vacation mid June so I don't want it before then.

I am nervous and wondering if I am doing the right thing. I think that's mind games. I mean, I have probably joined ww and tried more diets than most. I can tell you the nutritional data of practically everything. You would think I could lose weight without surgery. But, if I could, I would have. So I think I am just having normal questions and thoughts...maybe not. What do you think?

Is anyone from GA? Has anyone has surgery with Dr. Blaney? I would love to hear from you.:)

I think your thoughts and questions are normal. I think this is sort of a last resort for people who have tried thousands of different weight loss diets that didn't work. Like you said yourself, if those diets worked, would you be here right now?

It's something I do NOT regret doing, I feel better... I'm starting to look better. It's a wonderful thing.

Good luck Sunny!

Sunny, Happy Mother's Day! Welcome to LBT ;)

Sure, it's normal to question such a big decision. For me "reversible" and "adjustable" were the major selling points. Sure, there are possible complications - and I took those into account when making my decision. In the end, I decided to go ahead with the procedure rather than waiting and continuing to gain lb after lb.

That was a year and a half ago and, while I'm not a model bandster, I would do it again. I've been lucky and maintained a slow/steady loss. I've got another 25-30 lbs to go before I make it to my goal weight. I plan to be there by my 2 yr anniversary in October.

I live in TX, but I know there are many GA people here. You might try starting a thread in the Georgia forum under USA Local Lap-Band Support

I wish you all the best,

Karla

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
