Can't wait to hear the answer to this!! My family told me last week my breath was bad. Made me feel horrible. To add insult to injury, I have had an abscessed tooth!! I have been sucking on sugar free peppermints ever since!! I think it could be the breaking down of ketones from the decreased carb intake. Looking forward to other posters giving hints on what to do and if it will ever go away!!!

The Ketosis does level out. But for awhile breath, BO and urine are very strong smelling. Once you start eating more balanced meals it gets better.

My sister told me today that my breath stinks. She is a nurse and completely understands why it stinks.

As a nurse myself I can tell you it is from ketosis. It is a metabolic state where most of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis where blood glucose provides most of the energy. This is from what we eat. Without the carbs, we don't get the simple sugars to break down like we used to. It does subside but for some, it will linger. Keeping hydrated helps flush the body.

I've got some Biotin. But I never knew about the breathe. This is a phobia of mine. Omg! I will contact my herbalist to see what I can do naturally without affecting my regime that my physician has set.

My sister says it is common. I started to have bad breath as soon as I started my pre-op diet. Ketosis and the Protein Shakes contribute to the bad breath and that yucky after taste, ugh like gag me with a spoon!! Listerine strips have become my new BFF :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
