I know this is not related to the Holiday Callenge but wondered if anyone has any ideas. I eating my daily Protein and taking my Vitamins in the morning, not as good at remembering at night. But I feel like I my hair is falling out quicker than usual and I have noticed changes in my eye sight. Anyone have any tips? Being skinny isn't going to be as enjoyable with bifocals and a come over like my dad.

I had surgery 7/14... My hair is also shedding, but it's only temporary :) telogen effluvium is the term and it's caused by the stress of major surgery... It started the day you had surgery. When your hair started shedding 3-4 months later it's because that is when the new hair started to push the old hair out if it's follicle. Hair loss can be further aggravated by low protein and Iron levels, but that is a whole other issue. I too am distressed by the hair loss don't get me wrong... Even though I know it's just temporary it's still difficult to have hands full of hair is your hand and on the shower floor. I experienced this once before right after I had my third son ( pregnancy and birth can precipitate this type of hair loss ) that was 12 years ago and it returned to normal. I don't know about your eyesight issue not having any of those types of changes. Good luck

I understand this is why it happens and its temporary, but do you know how long it lasts? I am almost a year out and still shedding though a lot less. And the new hair is coming back. So I have funky hair at all stages ????. Talked to my stylist the other day and we are considering layers (which I hate bc it's hard to put my hair up when I run!) but want to time it appropriately!

A couple of things - first, was out of town Friday, so didn't check in. My weight this a.m. Is 227.

Next - hair loss!! Saw my doc yesterday and he said that while we're losing weight, our bodies conserve what it's given and focus on critical functions - of which hair is not. Once the weight loss slows down, the Hair loss should too.

Last thing - scrambled eggs!! The only times I've lost my Breakfast or felt like I was going to, were after eating scrambled eggs. Doc confirmed there's just something about scrambled that makes them almost form a block going into the sleeve. Weird!! So I'm back to hard boiled, soft boiled, poached, anything EXCEPT scrambled and that includes omelette. Beware of scrambled eggs!!

That's it for me! Wishing you all a blessed and Happy Thanksgiving if you Celebrate it!

No I'm not sure how long it will last. My started with vengeance last month (right on schedule). My hair dresser has had other clients that have had one type of weight loss surgery or another and we all experience it and she said it always grows back. As for what the other poster said... I'm am not so sure that it's because of the weightloss... My micro nutrients are better than ever and I get between 900-1300 cal with the average being 1100-1200/ a day. My Protein intake is well above 60 grams. My body has what it needs and my Iron levels which are also important to hair health was well in the normal range before and since surgery. Having 3/4 of your stomach removed is traumatic to your body no matter how well your recovery went... It is the the trauma that cause exponentially more of your hair follicles to go into a resting phase which is when they typically fall out. Normal is an 80% active (hair growing) 20% resting (hair shedding) ---after the surgery the ratio skews more in the resting phase than is normal hence the increase in Hair loss. Every article I've read specifically relates it to the trauma of the surgery now if you have prolonged hair loss without new growth that is a whole other issue and is more than likely related to your body not getting enough of what it needs ie protein and iron. It makes sense if you are not getting enough protein that your body would succumb to hair loss since hair is all protein but non essential.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
