3 day Pre-op diet for Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is November 3rd and my doctor has me starting my pre-op diet October 31st. Has anyone else had a 3 day ore-op diet? Breakfast & lunch I can have a shake and morning & afternoon Snacks I can either have a low fat cheese stick or a hard boiled egg then for dinner 6 oz of chicken breast with 1 cup of veggies. I am very confident with my choice of doctor he is very well respected. I just see all these 1 & 2 week pre-op diets and wonder why I only am doing 3! Of course I had my last appointment and forgot to ask.

I will add that I am on the lower end for BMI of 35 but have sleep apnea. All his paperwork says 3 days so it seems like an across the board for all his Patients not just lower bmi.

I had no pre op diet at all. Just Clear Liquids the day before and nothing after midnight the day of. I did ask him about how others have a 2 week pre op usually, and he said he has gone to conferences where they talked about the "liver shrinking", and he said it's so minimul that it doesn't even make a difference when it comes to surgery. All doctors are different I guess! I felt very happy to not have to go through a 2 week per op diet! It allowed me to enjoy a couple of nice meals and craft beers with my hubby before I had surgery :) Oh how I miss beer....

My pre op diet was essentially Atkins phase one. No liquid at all. Just lots of Protein. My surgeon is attached to a bariatric center of excellence. I lost 18 lbs on it. So follow his instructions, it works for him and will work for you as intended.

I had a one week pre op diet of full liquid only and clear the day before. It was the shrinking of the liver issue. I was so excited to get to that point I didn't mind it at all. My husband even did the preOp with me. What a support to have someone going through the same along side me. And he fed the kids so I wasn't in the kitchen smelling the food I cooked for them. He was a blessing before and after.

I did have a lower BMI and the surgeon told me that he actually had a hard time getting all of the instruments to fit!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
