How long to return to work?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My name is Marie, I'm new here :)

I have my banding scheduled on 6th June.

I managed to get all the time I'm in belgium off of work, but I couldn't get the day after I come back to England off, which is the 10th June... 4 days after surgery.

How soon did everyone else go back to work? Will I be hurting after 4 days?

Thanks :D

P.S I really enjoy reading everyones experiences on here!

Marie, welcome to LBT! and, congratulations on your upcoming surgery!

I had surgery on a Monday, tried to go back to my desk job on Friday and only lasted a couple of hours.

I imagine you'll still be a bit sore, and it depends on your job.. if you do a lot of bending and lifting it might be difficult. If you sit at a desk, as I do, I recommend taking a pillow to put behind your back. Since after surgery our abdomen is sore, we take great pains in protecting it and tend to "tense" up.. I found a pillow at my back helped my posture and I felt a bit of pressure relief in the tummy.

I pushed myself too much in the beginning so that may be why it took me a bit longer to recover. By day 6 I was feeling much better.

I wish you all the best,

Karla

Hey Karla,

Thanks for the reply :)

My job is at a call centre, so I'm pretty much sitting down all day,

and the day that I return is a Sunday (god knows why they could not let me have a sunday off?!) so I will being doing pretty much nothing on the Sunday :D

Thanks so much for your advise!

My doctor said if possible he wants his patients to be off 2 weeks. I can do that so there's no problem. I wouldn't want to go back before I was ready.

My Dr recommended 2 weeks also :)

But with my work, it's so hard to get time off, because it's in a call centre, and everyone is fighting of the June/July time off. I only managed to get the week of the surgery off.

SuperKawaii,

MY name is Tami. I was banded on Tuesday 5/8, and went back to work on Friday 5/11 for a half day. My tummy area wasn't too bad, a little sore. What was hard for me was the gas pains. They have been really strong in my breastbone area and across my shoulderblades. I will be bringing my heating pad with me next week, that seems to help alot!

My Doctor wanted me to take off 3 weeks. I'm a Pediatric Home Health Nurse and I work nights, so was very hard enough to get the 2 weeks off, let alone 3. I was very glad that I took those 2 weeks off, to recover and settle in to my new routine.

I think each person is different. I went back to work on my 4th day, but some people aren't able to. I think you really just have to wait and see how sore you are and how you are feeling. It would also depend on what type of work you do.

I had my sugery on a Thursday and went back to work on Monday. I work in an office so it wasn't too bad. I was one of those lucky people who didn't have any problems after surgery, but everyone is different.

Good luck

I had my surgery on a Friday. I was not feeling up to working until Tuesday. Then I have to say I took it easy the rest of the week. The hardest part about my job, is that everyone always talks about food!!!

I was back after 4 days. My doctor wants people off of work for one week, though.

I had surgery on a Thursday and went back to work Monday (desk job). I was tired but it was really OK. I am 43 so am no spring chicken, but I survived. Plan on doing nothing in the evenings for that first week, if possible.

However, my doctor said I was a great patient because everything went perfectly and I was up and out of bed quickly / recovering fast. In other words, I was lucky. Everyone is different.

I work in a doctors office and went back to work in 10 days. But I was cutting my living room carpet up 3 days out from surgery. Please take it slow and don't force yourself to return

Thanks for the advise everyone.

I reckon, with mine being a desk job, I should be fine after all- considering all the advise. :)

Hi there. Every one is different when it comes to their pain tollerence. It all depends on what type of a job you have. Are you lifting and moving, or chained to a desk?

I had my surgery on Wed. and went back to work the following Tues. morning. I was able to function, but in retrospect, I should have taken that week off. I had a lot of discomfort with gas pains and I also had diarrhea that lasted about 2 weeks after surgery. It was extremely watery stools with no cramping, so I didn't have a real heads up when I had to go, it was a pretty sudden urge. As quick as I had started getting the diarrhea, it went away.

I definitely didn't need the dr. recommended 3 weeks off from work, but I would have at least taken a week and a half or so.

Best of luck. Its all worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
