HOW MANY OF YOU HAD YOUR TASTE BUDS CHANGE?

Recommended Posts

Prior to my sleeve surgery, I just about lived off carbs and especially sugar. Most likely one of the reasons I became so heavy. After surgery, I really am not fond of sugar much at all. I consider this a blessing! Prior to surgery, I drank Pure Protein chocolate shakes and loved them. It is a great way to get 30 grams of Protein. Now I can barely stand the taste of them. I used to use Crystal Light as I hate Water and this helped a lot. Now, I can hardly stand the sickening sweet taste. Really hard for me to get all my Water in. Thank God for sugar free popsicles!

I just wonder if anyone else has experienced this?

Good luck to you all!

It would be wonderful if that remained that way but most people find that their fighting the old battles after a time. I fight carbs all the time esp. sweets. I try to limit to baby Cookies or tea biscuits. Not every day but most times when cravings hit.

On the other hand I can't stand tuna. But eat a lot of Beans and fish. I have been having issues with beef. On and off relationship. Pork as well does not like me. I am always trying new things now to find eating interesting because I can only eat so much eh. Getting the most bang for my buck.

Good luck!

I just learned the hard way that the cravings come back. Two weeks ago I was snacking like a mad woman Cookies, cake, chips. It was mindless and I never thought I would have that problem again. This week I have made a point to avoid all sweets and most carbs. I'm glad I caught it before it went too far.

gpvegas,

I had a WONDERFUL period of time where I had no desire for sugar or carbs. Unfortunately, it didn't last forever :(.

I now have to be mindful of what I'm eating and not go crazy with carbs and sugar. I keep my Protein intake high and of course my Water intake to curb the desire.

I do tend to crave savory foods much more than I did before surgery. I want non-sweet foods. I can't stomach the super sweet Protein shakes anymore.

Blessings,

Kathleen

Because I eat a diet rich in good Proteins and veggies, I find that I don't stomach (ha!) chemical taste well at all. Artificial sweeteners are the worst! I was addicted to Diet Coke, have taken two sips post-op, and have no desire to EVER do that again.

I've also found I can't handle the amount of spice I used to like. Tongue and mouth, not stomach. Milagro the Mexican Wonder Tummy does just fine with it, but my mouth burns on even moderate spiciness. It seems to be getting a little better but still not where it was.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
