Pre Surgery Diet Change.....Headaches and Fatigue

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on Nov. 24. My surgeon doesn't require us to do a pre op liquid diet as long as we can lose some before surgery. I lost 9 pounds in 12 days by eating on the NUT Protein carb pairing diet...lost my way for a week, but back on it this week. The first 2 weeks didn't phase me.....I was able to maintain the diet and felt no side effects.

This week, I am very fatigued by 2 or 3 pm and having severe headaches. I just figured the calories of what I'm eating and here's the breakdown:

Breakfast: non fat Greek yogurt with a sugar free pudding cup and banana 260 calories

Snack: non fat cottage cheese 80 calories

Lunch: tuna with light mayo and triscuits 270 calories

Snack: string cheese 50 calories

Dinner: grilled chicken with light mayo on sandwich flat 215 calories

What am I doing wrong?

I had this too, it was really my body going through a detox of all the JUNK that I normally took in, sweets/caffine etc it's all not part of your new diet (which is good) but your body has to go through a withdrawl period. it will go away and you will feel so much better soon! stay strong!

I should have added that I haven't had sweets or soda since July 1 when I made the decision too have WLS. And I drink at least 4 bottles of Water a day.

When I get the headaches it's low blood pressure from no or low sodium. Check your bp I used to have to add in a pickle :)

I am doing the pre op diet but just shakes and non sugar drinks like broth and crystal light. 2nd day I started to have headaches. I'm on day 3 and still have headaches. Everyone says it goes away after your body gets used to less carbs and detox from all our bad eating.

But am I jealous you don't have a pre op diet!!!

I'm fortunate I guess! He says if your are losing weight you don't have to do the liquid diet. A coworker only lost 5 pounds and didn't have to do it!

My surgery is 11/26... I just saw the nutritionist today as I have to go every 2 weeks until surgery. She is starting me now on weaning my way into the pre op liquid diet and by Nov 1 I will be on pure liquid until surgery. I am really nervous. I have three young daughters and I feel like the cooking separate thing is gonna be the toughest.

I'm on day three of my preop diet Protein Shakes for breakfast and lunch and a small piece of lean meat for dinner and some veggies. I've a had some really bad headaches that do not get better with Tylenol. My BIGGEST problem is I have been so emotional! I cry easily which is not like me and I'm grouchy. I know it's because I have a lot of stressors going on and food was my coping skill (a poor one). Now I'm trying to really work on new healthy coping skills. Would like to hopefully utilize more exercise when these headaches subside.

Wow. There are loads of us feeling the pre-op diet crazees along with being apprehensive about the upcoming surgery. I bounce back and forth between being excited about being able to redirect my life journey for health and full out, freak scared moments.

We'll all get through this and appreciate the precious time we have recaptured having surgery.

YES. This is me. One minute I'm like, "I've got this! I'm strong and determined." Then the next I'm crying and freaking out thinking about how upset my family would be if something bad happened. I can't wait until this is all a distant memory.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
