Bailey Bariatrics in Owasso

Recommended Posts

No. I scheduled my surgery on a Friday and I flew out the following Tuesday.

The only thing they told me is to start eating salad and no soda.

Then they told me the day before to only consume Clear liquids and a laxative. The next morning I went in for surgery and I was good to go.

That is what I liked about Mexico. It was quick. No 3 months of dwelling. My mind was made up and I wanted to go through with it. I feared if I didn't do it, something might come up and then I wouldn't get it done.

Sounds like an advertisement to me Cota. Just saying.

I would rather have all this testing done before hand and have my surgeon know what he's getting into. I feel just flying down to Mexico the surgeon wouldn't have any background info and it would be more dangerous. Besides, I like Dr . Varnell and the staff in the OR spoke very highly of him. :-)

They made me fill out a huge questionnaire and they had me send my medical records. They ran tests on the Tuesday I arrived and surgery on Wednesday. So they didn't just go into it blindly. So the surgeon did have background info. She was very sweet. Everyone was so terrified of me going to Mexico. Look at my pictures. I even posted a picture of the drain tube.

I give everyone this to compare it to. North Tulsa is very dangerous. We don't judge all of Tulsa based on North Tulsa. Mexico is the same way. There are bad areas but we can't judge an entire country based on a few things that happen in certain areas. We can't Judge all of Tulsa based on the news and murders and thefts etc.

And of course the staff is going to speak highly of him... who do you think pays him?

*them not him. LOL.

BTW I didn't mention the place I had surgery at. So what I'm saying shouldn't sound like an advertisement. This is an odd thread to go on for so many pages about the same place in Owasso. I haven't heard much about them, but I know if I had to choose save $10k or more and go to Mexico or spend it and go to Owasso I'd choose Mexico.

I've become a fan of surgery in Mexico. I know I never would have spent the high amount of money on Surgery here. But with the savings in Mexico, it was a no brainer for me.

Good for you pinkbunies but this thread is for those of us who are using Bailey so going to Juarez Mexico doesn't apply to us. Thanks for the info though.

Hi,

I had my Gastric Sleeve surgery at Bailey Medical on 10/29/14. Dr. Varnell was my surgeon. I was very impressed with Dr. Varnell, the anesthesiologist and all the staff at Bailey Medical Center. I had a technically difficult surgery due to prior abdominal surgeries, so we really expected that they might have to do an open surgery rather than laparoscopic. Dr. Varnell did a great job and was able to complete the surgery without having to do an open incision. I had no complications after surgery. I also did not have a drain tube like pinkbunies mentioned.

That's awesome. The drain tube sucks and hurts. Congrats on your surgery.

I was planning to do mine next month but I unexpectedly had to have gallbladder surgery. I had it done on the 24th and I'm still hurting pretty good. Dr Varnell was going to do that surgery but he took Christmas week off so he passed me off to another doc in his office. I really wanted Varnell to do it, oh well. But if my gallbladder surgery has hurt this much it makes me very leery to do the sleeve. I have quit taking my Vitamins and quit doing the Protein Shakes when I was doing 2 a day. I have basically stopped doing everything the dietician told me I needed to be doing. I'm afraid I've scared myself out of doing the sleeve. All I have left to do is 1 more dietician and the support group. I got my cpap machine yesterday. I am scared and mad at myself at the same time. I plan to go to the next Owasso meeting, and hopefully meet some people that will help whip me back in shape :-). Thanks for listening everyone.

Hello,

I am new here and plan on having surgery at Bailey. My first appointment with Dr. Kirk is Jan. 20th. I have Aetna and will be completing the 3 month program. Since I'm a Teacher and have summers off I'm hoping to complete everything and have surgery at the end of May. I actually live in Owasso so I'm glad that I'll be close to home through this process. If anyone has any advice or information they think that will be helpful, please let me know. @@Cota1262 I plan on attending the next support group as well so maybe I will see you there :)

@Shenara- Hey sounds good. All I have left is the support group and another dietician meeting but I don't have a surgery date yet. They have 2 surgeons that do the surgery- Dr. Varnell and Dr. Katsis (I think that's how you spell it). I recommend doing all your other specialist visits ASAP. I have been slowly doing mine since June 2014. I have been so scared that I'm just taking my time. I have had to do a lot of testing: sleep study, EGD, EKG, stress test, pulmonary function test, psychological testing and blood work. From talking to the nurses at the other doctors appointments, they say they are getting super busy with bariatric patients so if your wanting to do it by May, talk to your bariatric navigator and get those appointments ASAP. Dr. Kirk is a very nice guy. At first, I wasn't so sure about him but he is a good listener and loves to talk- about everything lol. I think he truly cares. I have talked to the other staff at Bailey and they speak very highly of him (and they aren't impressed with some of the other doctors you will have to see). Good luck!

Cota1262 thanks for the info! As you can see I made some changes on my profile :). I am hoping to get all my appointments in ASAP I don't like to procrastinate when it comes to stuff like this. I seem very pleased with Bailey so far and think I made the right choice. I actually think Dr. Katsis has operated on me before at St. Francis. Well I hope we can keep in touch I have absolutely no one who has gone through this before to compare "notes" with and it's nice to know see someone on here going to the same place as me!

Your welcome. Come to find out after my sleep study that I have sleep apnea and had to get a cpap machine. Yuck. I'm not real thrilled with it and my body is taking awhile to get use to it. I am very pleased with Bailey. They put you under when they do the EGD and I was very pleased with everyone in the surgery area.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
