I'm confused....BCBS of MI

Recommended Posts

I called my insurance company today which is blue cross Blue Shield of Michigan. I was told that my insurance does not require a prior authorization however there are prior requirements that need to be met before surgery for example the six-month diet. so am I safe in assuming that my surgery is approved since there is no prior authorization required and I've completed all the requirements already? I asked the lady on the phone however it seemed like she kept getting around my question and saying there isn't a prior authorization required...

I think I would ask for that in writing, I have BCBS of OK and I asked them to fax me things that I wanted in writing and they did, twice. Also, has your surgeon's office worked with them before? Maybe they can help you. Good luck.

My surgeons office said they've never really had a problem with my insurance and that's the "ideal" insurance for patients to have ... I'm not too worried but I was waiting for an approval after my 6 month diet so when she said that it kind of threw me off

Rdelly01, did you get this figured out? I have BCBS of MI and I am having surgery in 2 weeks. I can tell you what they required me to do if you need?

I am attending a presentation Tuesday and then I will probably be getting an apt with my Dr in Michigan, so I might be going down the same road as you.

You can typically look up the info online. I have Keystone 65 which is a Blue and I can easily look up coverage information online.

Karess, can you message me about what was required for you?

I have bcbsmi thru my husband's employer, the dr I am using has been kind of unclear about some things...they just keep saying to get the psych evaluation, cardiac clearance, and to write down my diet history attempts on paper, they're leading me to believe they can get past the 6 month diet preop ..especially because I am just meeting the bmi requirements and if I lose any weight I won't...idk I am confused and just want to know how soon I can get this done.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
