Protein before surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am doing my 3 month supervised diet right now for gastric bypass surgery. I was wondering if anyone has or is doing Protein Shakes prior to surgery. If so, what is a recommended amount of Protein for 1 serving? Any help would be appreciated.

I think you are supposed to have a whole shake as a Meal Replacement. A Premier Shake (pre-made container) is 25gr Protein. In any case after surgery your requirement is 60 gr per day. I imagine it would be the same pre-surgery but you may be getting protein from other sources as well.

If I remember correctly, I think my NUT said over 20-25 grams in a serving is a waste. You won't digest the rest.

My classes said that we digest about 30 grams of Protein at a time. I'm using Unjury Protein Powder and mixing it with a store brand of skim milk sold at a local grocery store that has 12 grams of protein per cup. I mix 1 scoop of protein powder with 1 cup of milk.

This is why you make it 3 meals with 20 to 30 gr each. It will add up to at least 60 gr, the daily min requirement. That's what's on my plan, is it the same for you?

Yes, I will get to have three meals a day, no Snacks. At six weeks, I'm expected to be able to get all 60 grams from eating Protein, not from Protein Shakes

Yes, me too, Protein Shakes are only for early stages because our stomachs can't digest most animal Protein and we need it to heal our scars inside and out. It's meant as a temporary fix and its easily absorbed. I am glad this is temporary because protein shakes are not my fave.

I don't have my list in front of me but I am supposed to eat hummus, refried Beans and Greek yogurt fairly soon

Not refried Beans, I think it's only blended chick peas

No hummus for me. I will get "mashed" pinto and black Beans starting week two. Along with low fat cottage and ricotta cheeses, low fat shredded cheese, eggs and fat free Greek yogurt with one Protein Shake a day.

I tried several Protein Shakes prior to surgery. I settled on Premiere Protein shakes because I go the most protein for the fewest calories , they are pre-made and easy to use and I liked the taste. I recommend you find the one that is right for you. I split the shake and drank half first thing in the morning and the rest at night before bed.

Call me strange but I like Protein Shakes and will miss them when I am supposed to stop them phase 3 post open. I like EAS lean advantage, 120 cals, 17 g Protein a serving.

Oops! Wrong button! I'm using Unjury Protein powder to lose weight pre-op and will be evaluated at 6 weeks post-op to see if I still need to use them. But I really like them and don't want to give them up!

I am trying to use a Protein powder to help me try to lose weight before surgery and so that I can get used to drinking something and not eating as much.

Just starting to use shakes. I heard the Unjury is the best, from some of my post Bariatric surgery friends. I just tried one by Physiologics PhysioWhey. Took a lot of doctoring, more vanilla, more sweetener. Had a metallic taste. Has anyone else tried this one??

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
