diarrhea post op

Recommended Posts

My son had surgery 3/7. Has had really loose watery stools since Thursday. Related to full liquid diet? Forgot to ask the nurse when he scheduled his post op appt. today. Anyone experienced this? Immodium an option? Thanks for your replies. (he has no abdominal pain or fever.)

I went threw that as well. My doc said Immodium was fine and if after a week if I still had it to call him. He said it was common. As first you loose alot of weight at once. I think my body was trying to fight the band. Just watch him. Keep plenty of liquids and lots of Protein Shakes. 2 or three a day with skim milk should start to make his stools harden. I also ate alot of yogert.

Depending on the person's post op diet they may not be able to have Protein shakes or milk.

Diarrhea is normal, liquids in/liquids out. Immodium is great, just follow the directions on the bottle. Just as soon as you think it is fixed and stop the Immodium, just know it will likely start again.

But it doesn't need to come out in the form of diarrhea. That's just a waste of fluids and especially in the beginning many people have a hard time getting fluids in as it is. Diarrhea can also lead to electrolye imbalances as well.

Thanks to everyone for responding to my question. I guess you all figured I meant surgery was 5/7 not 3/7.

I had diarreah for about 2 weeks and then it just quit. I did notice when I would drink chicken brooth made with boulion cubes. I did do imodium. I really made sure I did my liquids so I wouldn't become dehydrated.I too was really concerned but it went away and now everything is like it's suppose to be.

hmmm I am just the opposite. I finally went today for the 1st time since the 9th.

Keep in mind you aren't going to poop as much as you used to, you'll be taking in a LOT less food than before surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
