I am just coming out of mushies today and I am averaging about 500-600 calories a day. As I move to solids we will see what happens with the calorie count.

I am a side sleeper, you will have pain at the incision sites after surgery but if you want to sleep on your stomach as you heel you will be able to sleep on your stomach. When I was banded I found I changed from a stomach sleeper to a side sleeper and never went back.

I have felt hunger in my liquid phase and you won't starve yourself you have a little body fat to burn. I would be more freaked out about dehydrating yourself and it is much more common. I drank enough daily that my urine ran clear and kept that up and I knew from the clear urine I was flushing my kidneys on a daily basis and I was safe. You just keep drinking slowly especially right out of the hospital it gets easier.

Head hunger is when you look at something or think about it and want it.... even though you really aren't hungry you just want chocolate cake or junk food etc. Head hunger is a tough one to conquer and is something most wls patients are challenged with. The more you resist head hunger or find an alternative ie. drink a bottle of Water, eat a piece of fruit etc. the quicker I find head hunger goes away.

My go to liquid was Tomato Soup from whole foods or that I made, the other liquid was an arnold palmer I have an amazing partner in crime and he squeeze lemonade sweetened with Stevia and then I do a mix of about 3/4's unsweetened ice tea to 1/4 lemonade and it was my ultimate I can drink this anytime all day long drink.

Just be mindful of what you take in, dont worry so much about the calories right off the bat, you will never get in what you need to in the first few weeks. Just listen to yourself, if you are on liquids, select protien drinks as your option. Yes you can sleep on your tummy, I am also a tummy sleeper, once you are healed I had no issues at all with stomach sleeping. I never felt starved after surgery, if I felt hungry usually a sip of Water or some Protein shake made it go away. Head hunger...this is the hardest to get over, your brain is telling you that you are hungry and you know that you aren't. Keep your mind busy...go for a walk, get a glass of water...do something to keep your mind off of food. Go to liquids and foods post op, Protien Shakes/G2/Water cheese Sticks (make up a whole meal sometimes and I am 6 months out almost!) cottage cheese, I like to get in my protien this way sometimes for Breakfast. scrambled eggs.

I hope this helps!

Good questions!

I don't think you can ever ask too many questions, I'm 20 days until my surgery and my head keeps coming up with all sorts of questions.

Hello, now this will be my experience.

1. It was very hard to get the calories in. The main thing was to stay hydrated and try to push the Protein shakes. I had little appetite and had some nausea. Make sure to sip sip and sip.

2. At 2 months out, I can sleep on my tummy.

3. The Protein drinks kept me full and with the nausea, I had no desire to eat.

4.Head hunger to me is when I am looking at. recipe videos and I get hungry. Other than that, its real hunger over here lol. I am set to eat every 2 hours. I stop drinking my Water 10-30 minutes before I eat.

5. My go to foods/liquids are yogurt,Protein Shakes or bars. I am still depending on the Protein Drinks.< /p>

There are plenty of people that can help. Keep the questions coming.

Later!

I decided during my full liquid phase (which lasted 5 weeks for me, but that's another story) I figured if I was going to live on Soups, I was going to splurge and get GOOD soups. None of that canned stuff for me. Whole food deli soups or homemade! That really helped with the boredom for me of the full liquid phase. And like someone above had said, don't worry about calories in the first couple weeks after surgery. Hydration is MUCH more important. You don't hear about people going into the hospital malnourished in the first few weeks after surgery, but you do hear about them going in for dehydration. Get as much liquids as you can possibly stomach and you will do just fine :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
