FJT 0 Posted October 19, 2014 Just joined this wonderful forum after doing a search for people who had gone through this journey. I had the procedure done October 8th and stayed on liquids for 7days. On day 8, I was excited to have scrambled eggs for Breakfast. Unfortunately, the eggs got stuck and I threw up. My first experience after reading much about it. Now this is the week I was to be on puree foods. Unfortunately I was traveling so I could not adhere to the puree diet. So for dinner I had salmon but with no issues. But today, I had halibut for lunch and I have been throwing up over four times. Not sure why this is happening. Any thoughts or suggestions on why this could happening would be appreciated. Kitt3000 757 Posted October 19, 2014 Hmmm, maybe your tummy is saying " I'm not ready for this, I'm still healing"? When something isn't working, go back to what was, and slowly move forward. Especially after throwing up episodes, it's likely your pouch and banded area has become irritated, and will be all the more sensitive. I hope you feel better soon, a call into your doc may be in order? Feel better my friend!
JustWatchMe 7,117 Posted October 20, 2014 Welcome to BandLand! I was on full liquids for six weeks post op. So one week sounds kind of fast to me. I agree, call your doctor and ease into the solid foods. Good luck!
CherieRyde 227 Posted October 20, 2014 Yeah .. go back to liquids. Soups, Protein drinks, etc. You've moved too fast for your body, and it's telling you as much. Also, pay attention to the way you feel while eating. I usually know within 2 bites if I can tolerate a specific food that day. If I can't tolerate it, I feel like I'm struggling to swallow the bite. Almost like it's too dry or thick. Finally, make sure you are *NOT* drinking while eating. I usually sip on my drink while I wait for my main dish (avoid eating the salads or whatever they bring to you first), and then I push the drink away or ask the waiter to take it away when my main dish arrives. 2muchfun 8,927 Posted October 20, 2014 First, you're taking huge chances with eating solids so early. There are very specific reasons why you shouldn't be eating these foods so early. Your band is sutured into place around your stomach and vomiting can lead to those sutures tearing away. Salmon has 4 times as much oil in the flesh as halibut. Halibut is a very dry fish and can get stuck in our stomas just like dry chicken or port. It takes months to learn how to eat like a Bandster. That's why doctors don't want you eating solids so soon. You're just not ready at this point. I know I wasn't and I see people post here all the time who are 6 months out with similar problems. Eat small, eat very slow and chew your food to an applesauce consistency. Sorry for the tough love. You'll get this eventually but don't damage the surgery your good surgeon has done. loser2014 73 Posted October 20, 2014 I am 2 weeks post op and am also traveling, so have started on regular foods sooner than recommended. The reason I am not worried about this is everything (eggs, chicken, even Pasta and bread) had gone down easily and stayed down. The only sliming episode I have had was when I took a Vitamin on an empty stomach and even that stayed down. I guess what I am saying is if you are having problems with solid foods, go back to liquids/purees. Buy one of those mini blenders and order Soups when you are out. Everyone's body is different and it sounds like you are eating too much too soon for yours.
FJT 0 Posted October 20, 2014 thank you for the replies. I will stay the course. Definitely a challenge when travelling. Thanks

Consuming liquids & purees is a way to keep the stomach calm during the healing phase. They tend to leave the stomach about as quickly as they come in and with much less violence than solid foods Consuming solids, even though they stay down, causes the stomach to go into the peristalsis mode. The stomach is massaging and churning the food in your stomach to aid in digestion. This extra movement is not good for a freshly sutured stomach. It's not just getting food stuck in our stomas. You may get away with disobeying the rules but then it may come back to haunt you in the guise of a slipped band that was never allowed to settle into place. jmo tmf
loser2014 73 Posted October 20, 2014 But....what's the difference between chewing your food to an applesauce consistency and eating applesauce. I'm not trying to be a brat. I'm actually curious. How does your stomach know if your food was pureed by a blender or by your molars and saliva.

How does your stomach know if your food was pureed by a blender or by your molars and saliva. Yes is the answer to this. It does. When you are chewing and having to break down foods even in your mouth you are putting a tax on your digestive system which is at this point trying to heal from what is MAJOR surgery. We take it lightly because we are in and out of hospital and we feel pretty good and hell we are hungry. So your traveling? Grab a to go shake and eat it there are pudding cups and applesauce and yogurt and every diner has Soup. There are even mini blenders the size of a cup you can take along. This is not hard but it's not easy if you were not ready for this surgery why have it? If your not going to be compliant and work with your tool then you are going to suffer for it, the band does not care it is a bit of plastic and metal in your gut. You have to care enough to take care those parts of your body that can not be replaced. So be compliant and you will be rewarded with weight loss and health, fail to do so at your own risk. CherieRyde 227 Posted October 20, 2014 EXACTLY what TMF and @@lisacaron said. Listen to the two of them. They have a lot of good advice and have been at this for a while.
