QUESTIONS TO ALL THE POST OPERATION SLEEVER'S

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone :) my questions are......

Who was your gastric sleeve surgeon and how much stomach did he removed?

I ask because i fear having too much of my stomach removed and won't be able to hold down enough food or fluids including Protein to keep my weight leveled and me from losing alot of hair.

Is it hard to keep your weight at a curtain level once you are at your idea weight?

Do you have to take multi Vitamins daily and how often. Thank you everyone :)

My sleeve surgeon was Dr. Brebbia, Medstar Montgomery Hospital in Olney, Maryland. I don't know the exact percentage of stomach removed. My understanding is that, in general, around 85% is removed.

I was just sleeved a few weeks ago, so can't answer the long term question. However, my surgeon said I needed clear fluids for the 2 or 3 days after surgery. It's hard to get much down then, so I had stocked up on a few bottles of Isopure clear flavors. A large bottle has 40 grams of Protein. I'm not sure having Protein right after will help with the hair loss, but I figure there would be no huge drop off in the amount of protein I'm taking in, so no shock resulting in Hair loss.

I get all my Vitamins from Bariatric Advantage: 1 Calcium citrate caramel-flavored cube in the morning, 1 Ultra Multi Formula with Iron in the middle of the day, then another calcium citrate in the evening. That way, the Calcium and Iron won't negate each other... they will always be more than 2 hours apart.

Mark Fontana, used a 42 bougie. So not a whole lot compared to others. I've seen 30 to 40, 40 being avg if memory serves.

Yes, yes and yes.

My dr used a 32 bougie and overstitched.

For the first several months it was a huge effort to get the Protein in not so much the fluids (after a week or so that was easy).

Closing in on a year and now it's not a struggle. It takes planning and paying attention and making wise choices.

Yes I take the Vitamins still.

Hard to maintain? As opposed to continuing to lose? That is uncommon, it's more typical to struggle with the last 10-20lbs to goal. But it happens. The sleeve is considered successful if you lose 60% of your excess weight (if you are 100lbs to the top of the healthy BMi range the average person will lose 60lbs).

I just reached my personal goal last week which is in the middle of my healthy BMi range so we shall see if it's hard to maintain (my guess is it will be easier to gain than continue to lose).

As someone who took Flintstones and never had Vitamin K that registered it was so low when tested, THANK YOU for spreading the word on Flintstones.

The ASMBS recently updated their Vitamin and mineral recommendations for each WLS procedure.
Better to use a bariatric vitamin(s) for at least 3 months since nutrition will be limited.
I use the guidelines and plan to take the Celebrate crystals, then chewables and use the right combo to make sure I get the correct amount of calcium citrate and Iron. I also plan to add more sublingual Biotin, zinc and B 12 which may be helpful for the potential hair loss.

Of course, the correct Protein amount will be the most important challenge for me.

Taking one or two One a Day or Flinstones will not meet the guidelines for all of the nutrients. It will save you money though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
