Birth control options

Recommended Posts

I'm curious as to what birth control you chose to have for after surgery. One of the consents I had to sign for surgery was to be on a durable form of birth control . Because they want us not to get pregnant for 18 months after surgery so it doesn't cause harm to us or any unborn child.

I haven't done the surgery yet but my doctor OK to stay on the pill -- ortho tri cyclen. I have PCOS and that is the recommended birth control for me and almost no side effects (expect a lower libido). But it could be because it regulates my testosterones LOL

I'm going to do the patch, IUD's were no Bueno for me. I believe the depo provera got me in my situation in the first place I was a normal bmi before I got on it as a teenager. I'm loathe to birth control but it has to be for now

Just a heads up. The contraceptive patch aka Ortho Evra is not recommended for people more than 190lbs. Something to do with large amounts of fat and hormone absorption.

Well, that's new for me, it worked fine when I was over 200 lbs. I guess condoms then until I reach that 190. I don't take to other contraception very well, maybe I will take nuvaring for a while. We are very good at not having kids when we don't want them, we have 3 spaced out over 7 years, the 1st and 2nd are 4 years apart, the 2nd and 3rd are 2.5 years apart and only because we wanted the last sooner.

That's interesting that someone would even prescribe that to you over 200lbs. I only say this cuz I'm a midwife and I work in OB/Gyn.

But kudos to you! I say if it works then stick with it!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
