So, I was at a support group meeting last night - my first one - and one of the things they were talking about was not being able to chew gum for the first 3-6 months because it causes you to get air bubbles in your saliva and it can cause gas pain and bloating. I am a huge gum lover and one of those people that's horrified of bad breath. In the past when I've done high Protein diets and gone into ketosis, bad breath was a major factor, so it was gum-gum-gum- and more gum! What do you post sleevers do to control the dreaded halitosis? Would sugar free mints be acceptable?

I use listerine strips. They come in a smal pack and melt on your tounge. Easy to carey in my wallet. sugar free mints should be fine. I had seen someone post that tic tacs are now like a bowl of candy.< /p>

I rarely chew gum because my teeth are sensitive, so ive gotten into the habit of drinking aromatic herbal teas instead, peppermint, cinammon, chamomile or berry teas are so refreshing. Anise seeds, parsley, and probiotic yoghurt are naturally refreshing too :-)

Well - my Dr's never told me I can't have gum so if I were you - I'd go renegade and try it. Worst that can happen is you get gas - so you quit.:-)

I like Listermint strips but gum is still better and I've had no problem with gum. I'm about 2 months out.

the NUT gave me plenty of instructions, do and do not eat

i have never been a gum chewer

one of those don't was gum

i was confused/surprised

she said if i accidentally swallowed the gum i might have a problem

you have bad breath???

i might get a retraining order for you to stay 1,000 feet away from me :D :D

good luck :)

my NUT definitely advised that gum is a NO NO...which is ok because as someone with a lot of dental problems i don't chew gum anyway. mints are fine as long as they don't bother you. sugar free though because you don't want to have any extra sugar being digested..especially for the first few months!

I had this too because of all the medication, they make a dry mouth swish that I used after I brushed my teeth in the morning and at night, within a week it was all back to normal and I was no longer foul! :) good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
