Post-op follow up visits

Recommended Posts

I just had my 3 month post op follow up with my doctor and things are going really well. I've lost over 75 lbs. since surgery with little or no problems, I am wondering if any of the vets encountered any setbacks/problems during the 3-6 month time frame. I made my 6 month appointment but am wondering how important it is to keep it. The reason I ask, is that my surgery was self pay and my follow ups are no longer covered by my self pay payment. I need to pay out of pocket for all future visits with the surgeon. I am hoping I can just transfer to my PCP and have insurance cover the visits. It was hard enough paying for the surgery so I don't want to keep paying out of pocket. Any thoughts are feedback anyone can give would be much appreciated.

I'm far from a vet (especially since we're not even supposed to post in this forum unless we're over a year removed from surgery), however...

I actually had my doc cancel my 6 month appointment. I got my blood work done and then about 3 days later received an email that unless I had specific concerns there was no need to come in for my appointment.

We fired or bariatric surgeon @ 3 mo post op (last month) and switched to our pcp. Unfortunately he doesn't exactly know when to do the testing. I read somewhere we are supposed to get bw done every 6 months for the rest of our lives but that seems a bit too much to me, especially if it's constantly good. It's pricey too!

I fired my doc because he actually stop treating me as a patient, instead he treated me as someone he could preach his religious believes on. I am not joking, he even had his bible far too many times. My insurance was for medical treatment not religious treatment.

I started using my PCM for check ups and it's gone well.

But I would suggest you discuss this with you PCM before you do this. They may not feel comfortable with the switch, or they could be ok with it. Just discuss it with them 1st

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
